I know there have been several questions about Sunday morning IDPA practice at the Arms Room. I've agreed to run it for the summer. If practice will be cancelled for any reason I'll post a notice here and the Arms Room Facebook page. So if you don't see a cancellation notice just assume practice is on from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The cost is $10.

Very cool, Jeff!

I haven't been to practice in a looooooooong time. Can you kind of give of an overview of the kind of practice you're doing? Is it just running scenarios over and over or are there drills as well? Any coaching or feedback at all? Just curious... ;-)

Thanks,
T.

This morning we spent the first hour on drills including a little coaching. I'm no master, but I've got the basics down enough that we were able to point out a few problem areas here and there and work on correcting them. For the second hour we ran through the same scenario several times and critiqued each other and found places to improve our scores. Overall it was a good session and I think we'll keep the format for a while.

I hate to dig up an older thread, but can anyone tell me what's the current status of Sunday IDPA practice at The Arms Room? I'm interested in getting into IDPA, and would like to see and learn some of the basics in a non-competitive environment. I think I have a small idea of what to expect from the "basics" video on the WHIDPA website and from what I read in a large portion of the IDPA rule book. Now I'm just ready to go do it! Is TAR's practice very good? Is it organized or is it "open practice"? I think I would need someone to help me through the fundamentals of the actions and course of fire.

The Sunday practice is still listed on TAR's website as starting at 10AM. For the practice, should I show up with all of the IDPA-required gear or is it more focused on drills?

Thanks and happy hunting.

Yes, we still have Sunday practice at 10am so just show up. It is a relaxed atmosphere with a good group of guys and gals that will make you feel welcome. I would say it is more on the informal side but still follow basice IDPA regulations, of course safety is sitll number one.

We also still hold IDPA fun matches on Monday nights starting at 600pm, hope you can make that as well.

the Sunday morning practice as Brian said is informal. Depending on who is running it that weekend, we either focus on scenario types to work on a technique for that scenario or we setup for drills to improve and practice our techniques. Both are good and both work well when we shoot IDPA. Come out and we all try to help each other. It is not the end to all end of practice, you have to do that at home dry firing. But it is good to get that feel and understanding of what to do at the IDPA shoot. Then come out on Monday night and do it for real. Great fun.

Thanks for the quick replies! All in all, do you think a person interested in starting IDPA should go to the practice or to the Monday night event to learn IDPA basics? Perfect world would be both, but I can probably only do 1 right now.

Thanks again. :patriot:

I would start with a Monday night IDPA fun match, I believe you would get the most out of it. Be there by 600pm if not a little earlier. You can ask for me if I am there, my office is next to the classrooms. :fire

The practice this morning was excellent. I learned several basic techniques that I plan to continue building at the fun match tomorrow evening! I highly recommend going to the practice if you want to learn in a non-competitive arena.

Drove 40 miles one-way to get to The Arms Room today for IDPA practice to learn the hard way there's no Sunday morning practice until after Christmas (maybe not until January).

I asked the person at the desk to request an update to the website for this information (the person later reported upon my check-out that the manager said the website said practice was cancelled). Perhaps I'm dense or looked in the wrong place before I left this morning, but I didn't see it. I checked again when I got home a few minutes ago and still couldn't find it.

FYI -- The Arms Room will not be hosting Sunday morning IDPA practice until later this month or in January.

Anyone else have more detail?
