IED deaths down due to US research by JIEDDO.

The above link is to a "Wired" magazine article. IED's are constantly examined by a US military
research entity known as JIEDDO (Joint Improvised Explosives Device Defeat Organization).
Various countermeasures are then provided to the troops in theater, but the bad guys keep switching
up their tactics.
We developed electronic countermeasures, but the bad guys switched to bombs made out of wood.
Interestingly, DNA helps to target individual bomb makers, as well as their unique style of building their IED's.
Bomb technology used in South America and Northern Ireland has moved, over time, to the Arab world.
