Dillon 550 Advice

I just picked up a used Dillon 550 press and need some advice. The die head has some white corrosion of some sort on it and I'd like to know the best method for cleaning it off. There is also some brownish/black corrosion on the powder funnel in the fill die that I need to clean up if possible. This press has obviously sat unused for some time and needs some TLC, but for the price I paid, I'm definitely willing to put in some elbow grease to get it where it needs to be. It came with .45 ACP dies (exactly what I needed) but some parts are missing. I've downloaded and consulted the manual and ordered some parts that are missing, but I am new to reloading and was looking for any other helpful suggestions from those of you who have been reloading for a while. Thanks in advance!

By die head, I assume you mean the removable tool head. Unless it's an aftermarket part, it's made of aluminum. I'd gently scrape off any loose corrosion with a plastic tool (scraper, putty knife, plastic knife) and then use aluminum polish to remove the rest of the corrosion.

I'd order a new powder die, since they're relatively cheap. As for the funnel, can you post a picture? You might have to replace the funnel, depending on where the corrosion is.

I'd start by cleaning the funnel with 99% rubbing alcohol. That will remove powder residue and and loose corrosion. Then get some pics if you can.

Edit: I just priced the powder die and funnel at Dillon's website. The die is $10.95 and the funnel is $14.95. Personally, I'd just order new and save the elbow grease for other projects.

You can get aluminum brightener at any big rig shop to clean those parts.

Thanks for the help! I called Dillon and they suggested soaking the parts in alcohol and cleaning with a scotchbrite pad. Tried it last night and the parts are now nice and clean. As soon as the missing parts I ordered arrive, I should be in business!
