I'm new here and couldn't figure out if this was the appropriate forum or not. Apologies if I missed one that's a better fit...

Is there any sort of proof of residence required? I work out of town for a month at a time. I got tired of paying rent on a place just to see it 3-4 days a month and just packed everything away and live out of a Hotel when I come home now. I use a friend's address for DL purposes while all my other mail goes to a UPS/MBE box that I rent. I don't have any sort of proof of residence at the friends house. The only thing with that address is my DL and only because they wouldn't let me use the PO box I had at that time. Will everything go through alright? Things have been this way since 08/2007. I have a solid address history prior to that.

I've been putting off the CHL for a LONG time now due to this address issue. I bought a S&W Bodygaurd .380 a few weeks ago and now I have the itch. I don't want to put this off any longer!

This brings up another question. Do they ask dates? I didn't update to the friends address for a few months. I honestly can't remember when it was. I'd hate to give a wrong date. Any way to look up when I did the change?

Just make sure there are no gaps in your history. It shouldn't be a big deal.

It is also worth pointing out that you can specify separate residence and mailing addresses for your CHL if you want.

As long as your friend backs you up as you beeing some sort of "room-mate", you should be good to go but if that status ever changes, you got 30 days to notify DPS or your card will be suspended for 30 days. The next time it's 1-3 years.

Make sure he's a good friend. The DL isn't that big a deal on change of address but the CHL is. There's a good chance that something will pop on the background check so make sure your dates are as accurate as you can make them.

You really should think of paying your friend some sort of monthly rent and then staying with him when you're in town. Keep the receipts and that should be the proof you need that you reside there. However, if that address comes up as some sort of 1 bedroom or efficiency apartment and your friend is married, then any basic investigation is gonna get you busted and you're gonna be in for some serious, serious trouble.

Totally agree! Keep details of your personal life "personal."

You should be good to go. Put down the address on your DL as your residence address, and your UPS box as your mailing address. Your work address is where you physically work.

DPS should be just fine with all that since it matches your DL, and since you have been paying rent, you are good to go. No proof of residence will be asked for. You have a Texas DL, so that is all the proof you need.
