I am thinking about throwing a light on my Remington 870 tactical - my home defense weapon of choice. I hear great things about Surefire, but lack the resources. Any other good recommendations?

I ended up going with a
Streamlight TLR-2 with laser. Probably run you about $230. I decided that, for home defense, I could see times where I might want the laser and not the light, or vice versa. There is an 870-specific mounting attachment for it, or you can go with a slightly heavier but universal magazine tube rail adapter.
Oh yeah, you can also add a green or red filter to the light if you want illumination that will impact your own night vision less than the white LED alone.

...Home Depot sells a new Maglite LED that's $29.25 and brighter than some Surefires...made tough like Mags always have been...I can't recommend that you attach it to your shotgun, though...a mounted light is great for cops who're well-trained but most citizens don't need to have their barrel pointed anywhere they're looking...and it's hard to do quickly, unlike a hand-held light...the biggest problem with a mounted light is that you're right behind it and that's what they'll likely aim at...I know it's been a long time since the 70s but we taught to hold the light as far away from the body as possible...and we also taught how to shoot and cycle the 870 with shoulder stock one-handed...
...the Mag's slimmer than the Surefire and has low, high, and strobe settings...I've given several as gifts and gotten rave reviews...you can buy at least two for the price of a Surefire and the batteries are a lot cheaper than the lithiums...if you don't like what you find when you try it...take it back locally...it'll blind you at night if you look into it...
