I was at a Comedy Defensive Driving class in Grapevine once a few years ago (don't go), and to help break the ice our instructor asked us what our fears were. A black woman had guns high on the list, so later on I started talking to her about protection, safety and the average person's perception of firearms. She actually became enthusiastic and left with a business card for a friend's CHL class

Then buying my Beretta at a gun show, there was a little old black lady buying a pistol next to me. I certainly believe the story, and it feels good....

Actually, the reasons may be more clear than you might think, and it may have something to do with the same reason the indigent are allowed to apply for a CHL at a reduced rate. Poor blacks experience a disporportionate degree of potential violence, and it is usually from their own community. See John Lott's book "More Guns, Less Crime", for the stats and explanations. It is great to see these ladies understanding that they have the right, and the ability, to protect their property and family.

She did a great job on that article. In reading the comments under her article it amazes me how some people go off on a tangent and still find fault with her story. I thought she did a great job of explaining the fears of today's African American women. If she fears a mob of beer drinking, pickup driving rednecks I respect that. If she fears middle aged, overweight white men, I respect that too. I have not walked in this woman's shoes so it would be wrong for me to call her fears racial biased or prejudiced. Why others can't be more open minded is beyond me.

Thank you for posting this. It was a good read and like you said, not a common story for the Austin Statesman to print.

It's almost depressing reading what some people say in response to the article, I feel bad for them, they just don't get it. They quote there "statistics" like they are experts, but yet have never taken the chance to be properly trained in using a firearm so that they can actually make an informed decision. /rant over
