...thanks for feeding and watering them...it's heartbreak to think of the animals starving and thirsting this summer...what a waste...

They are not as friendly around here. I have a feeder near our house and they stay in the tree line until we are inside. There is another feeder at the bottom of a bluff (~45' high). We can sit at the top and watch them eat. We are only about ~75' away and they know we are there--could care less. That is about as close as we can get. In the last week or so they are even drinking water we have put out for them. We thought maybe the smell of chlorine in the water was keeping them from drinking. I guess with all of the stock ponds around here all but dried up they got over their fear of the water.

I noticed you are in Leakey. We stayed in some cabins on the river (across the road from the airport) a few years ago. The deer would come up to a feeder in the middle of the cabins without much regard for the people.

My grandparents use to have land in the Davis Mountains that had Mule deer all over the place that they would feed corn to. My grandfather would put the corn in a coffee can and shake it around and then pour it into a feed trough. This routine went on for years and eventually led to the deer eating right out of his hand! My grandmother has a pic of it.
Thanks for the post as it brought back memories of my grandfather.

It is sad that they are so hungry but they sure are beautiful (and tasty  ). I love the velvet on them!

I'm headed to the Bandera area this weekend to fill feeders and check stands. Should be interesting to see how quickly they remeber the sound of the feeder spraying corn. I almost hate the thought of seeing how thin they will be.

The deer on my place are ok as I feed all year. Sure has been expensive this year. They are eating more than usual and the prices are higher. Still praying for rain!!!
