Looking for a place to deer hunt

I am originally from Missouri where we have a friend who has quite a bit of land that i used to hunt on.

However, I have been in Texas since 2006 with the Army and every year I have been unable to hunt :grumble ('06 &'07 in Iraq, '08 training in DC, '09 in the field for an exercise, '10 in Korea).

Well, that is all changing as I am leaving Active Duty in 19 days

I was talking to my son the other night and he asked me if I would take him "buck hunting" when I got home?

This came as quite a surprise for me. While he is a country boy he never showed the enthusiasm for hunting that my daughter has.

So, it got me thinking about hunting and looking for a good place to hunt.

Seeing as how I do not know anyone in Texas nor do I really know anything about hunting in Texas I am turning to y'all.

Do any of y'all have land that you lease or know of anyone that does?

I live in San Antonio but am willing to travel.

Almost all land in TX is privately owned and you must lease to hunt. You can apply to the state for a free hunt but the competition is fierce. Otherwise you need to hunt on a friend's land. Thank you for your service.

DTOM, Thanks for your service. As stated most all land in Texas is private and has become very expensive to lease. I wish we had room on our modest lease in the Hill Country near you, but unfortunately we don't. The situation for hunting this season is looking more bleak with each passing day anyway. The last corn I bought was $9.15/50# and now two weeks later it's $9.75. If I may suggest you might look into hunting on one of the military bases. I'm not sure which ones are available but I'm sure an Internet search would turn up some info. Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept can provide info on public access properties, but they are usually hard to get into especially at this late date, but you never know. Glad your son is showing interest in the sport and kudos to you for encouraging him and making an effort to find a place to. With deer and all wildlife struggling and making it a potentially low kill ratio it's not about whether you bag the game it's so much more than that. Good Luck!

If you are at Fort Sam, check with the Environmental office about Camp Bullis or call the Camp Bullis Environmental folks directly. The adjoining Camp Stanley Storage did have hunts some years back - you need to contact their Environmental office as well. Both are out near Boerne. I used to know all the folks at all three facilities but I believe all are retired or moved on so I can't give a name. :patriot:

I have looked at hunting on post in the past. However, the things you have to do in order to be eligible then have to do to hunt there are absolutely ridiculous.
