To the other CHL Instructors:

Anyone use assistant's or guest instructors? I just refreshed my memory on how to get approval for this (online approval form). But my question is whether DPS will allow a non-certified "assistant" to help you facilitate the course, without actually doing any instruction.

I typically teach very small classes - 5 students or less - and handle everything myself. But may have an opportunity to teach a class of about 20 students in the near future.

Obviously, I could bring in a second certified CHL instructor and split duties/costs/profits with him/her. I also may be able to bring in someone who is not CHL certified, but is TCLEOSE instructor certified and I'm sure DPS would approve this person to help out.

But if I want to bring in just an "average Joe" to help out without doing any instruction, is this likely to be approved? I'm thinking someone to just help "herd the cats" of a 20-plus person class, pass out instructional items, help fill out forms as needed, etc.

Good question, I'd email Sgt. Bamsch at DPS and ask him. I understand he's the one who approves/disapproves these kind of instructors.

If your guest does not offer any actual CHL instruction, but is just an admin aide to you, then they do not have to be certified as a guest instructor.

On my other option, I'm assuming someone who is TCLEOSE instructor certified and teaches Use of Force to cadets etc., would likely be approved as a guest instructor if I decide to go that route. Would you assume the same? I realize I still must submit form etc. and get actual approval.

As I recall, the guest instructor form had a place to enter the guest's instructor number. Doesn't that imply he must be a concealed handgun instructor?

If the guest instructor is a certified CHL instructor, they don't have to be approved by DPS and the guest instructor form is not needed.

Any person who has a special area of expertise that applies to CHL would likely be approved as a guest instructor - such as a POST or TCLEOSE certified instructor, or an attorney, or even an NRA certified instructor. You could also get permission for an NRA certified RSO to help you run the range portion.

Ok, I just checked the form. The entry I had in mind was "Certificate Number", and is for the hosting instructor, not the guest. Makes perfect sense now.
