"Apple iOS 5 and iCloud to be Available on October 12

Tuesday, 12:40 PM updated Tuesday, 1:12 PM

Apple today announced that the next system update for iOS devices will be available for download starting October 12. iOS 5 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch adds a number of new features, including revised push notifications across iOS devices via Wi-Fi and 3G, iMessage, better camera tools and lock screen camera shortcut, tabbed browsing, Twitter integration, and improvements to the email application. Apple didn't specify when on October 12 the software update would become available. Apple's new iCloud service, which helps to back-up and sync iOS devices, will also become available starting on October 12".

Well I hope the iCloud service means that I can update software from the phone without iTunes in the future.
Midnight tonight would be better.

Yes it does. The new notification system is awesome. Especially if you have "helpdesk" type apps you use. You don't have to clear 100 notifications just to use your phone.

I haven't been keeping up, will this run on the pre-iPhone 4S devices? iPad 2?

yes: iPhone 3gs and up, touch 3rd gen. and up, Both iPads.

EDIT:

EDIT 2:
Not sure if you will have to pay for the upgrade in older models. If I remember correctly, when iOS 4 came out, the 1st gen touches and iPhone 3G had to pay $5 for the software upgrade. Not sure if Apple will do something like this again.

I'm still on the fence re: the 4S... I've got a 3G so it's about time to upgrade, but still not sure if I want to stay in the family or venture into the Android world.

So, guys... let us very inquiring minds know whatchoo think when you get yours, please?

iOS 5 will be released sometime tomorrow. iOS releases are typically (though not always) done about 12pm PST (2PM CST). iCloud is scheduled to be released at the same time.

iTunes 10.5 was released earlier today so make sure you have already updated iTunes before attempting to update your iOS.

And last but not least, some sad news if you are still on Windows XP. You can still install iTunes 10.5 and use your Windows XP computer to install iOS 5. You will also be able to sync your iOS 5 devices to iTunes 10.5 via WiFi. But you will not be able to use the iCloud Control Panel to sync your iCloud data directly to your computer.

iCloud + Siri blows away any android device. Plus, iPhones just feel right. Other than that - the devices are fairly equal in what they do.

I have the 4 and am thinking about skipping the 4S. 3G to a 4S would be a huge improvement, but other than support for Siri (which will only work on the 4S), I don't think I'd notice much difference between the 4 and 4S.

My unscientific observation of coworkers with Android phones is that they have issues with their phones at a much higher rate than those with iPhones. Enough so that several have jumped ship to the iPhone and couldn't be happier.

The A5 chip is sick. I have an iPad 2 and I couldn't imagine that speed in a phone. Benefit would be proportional to usage I believe, but I'm looking fwd to it.

I have an iPhone 4, not sure if I'll upgrade to iOS5 (edit: see below). I don't even use a fraction of the features in iOS4. I only upgraded from the original iPhone because of the better camera and screen resolution (still have it, battery and everything still works great).

I find that statement interesting.

About 3 weeks ago, I saw someone with an original iPhone in like-new condition. I think that's cool. To me, it shows that person doesn't think he needs to have the latest and greatest. It's also kind of retro in today's culture.

Okay, I just looked at http://www.apple.com/ios/features.html as I was writing this post. I'll probably upgrade for the notifications and camera button on the lock screen. Wi-Fi sync would be nice if I ever synced the thing with my computer. And the new calendar will be nice for business stuff in the future.

If I really cared about good features, I would just jailbreak the thing again.
