Alcohol in CHL Class

What I first thought was a rediculous question has turned into a viable inquiry, after a little research.

I have a handful of folks that want to do a private CHL class at one of their homes. Two day schedule... class on Saturday and range Sunday. The questions was asked if they could BBQ and have a beer or two during the classroom time, since there would be no pistol handling until the next day. I quickly said no, figuring that there's got to be some state law/rule preventing it. Not only that, I'd rather not have alcohol anywhere associated with one of my classes. They understood and turns out their question was more tongue in cheak than anything else.

While sitting around today, I decided to research it a little bit. I was shocked to not see anything at all in writing to prevent it. Nothing in the CHL-16 booklet, the handout that i got in my instructor course, or in the administrative rules on the state website. The only reference that I found specifically refered to instructor students with no other mention about CHL license students. Thinking back to my instructor class two years ago, nothing was said in there either. Nor was anything said about it in my wife's class earlier this year. Now surely there's got to be something written somewhere that prevents it. Anybody know where it's written?

I don't want opinion... I already have one of those. I'm looking for black and white, written guidance from the state.

If it's not written, I think it well should be.

I think it should be part of the same set of written rules that say if students can wear shorts in class. :thumbs2:

Alcohol and firearms don't mix. That said if there will be no gun handling I see no problem with a beer or glass of wine during the class. Things like driving need to be addressed but I don't think a beer with a meal at the class if in a private home would be a problem. Just my two cents worth.

And whether or not people can listen to head bangin' music on their Ipods during breaks!

How about a written ruling from DPS if students can qualify with guns made in foreign countries?

A glass of wine or a beer with lunch is one thing. Rolling around in the floor drunk is another.

Good grief.

Shooting 50 rounds at your target during the test is one things. Rock and rolling 300 rounds full auto is another. :rolll

Any legitimate comments regarding guidance or rules from the State would be appreciated.

I took 4 hours of the class...then went and shot. Then we took a lunch break where me and my buddies ate about 10 lbs of crawfish and drank two beers with our meal (3 of us split up a 6-pak). We then went back for the remainder of the class. Should our CHL have an asterisk?

Lighten up is my advice. Drinking does not equal drunk or illegal. Drinks and guns don't mix...but that's it.

Personally I think that everyone should be able to forego the alcohol at least long enough to get through their CHL class. Is it against the law? No, but as an instructor I think we all have a responsibility to set the right example. This is a serious class, and it should be taken that way. Leave the beer for the dinner afterwards...

To each his own. I condemn no man for their choice.

Kindly remember to do the same when I tell all men:
Not in my class. I will send you out if I see it or smell it.

Lighten up, LT.

It won't hurt none if somebody brings in a family size jar of hooch and passes it around. Makes the time go faster and it improves hand eye coordination and aim on the range. It also helps defuse possible road rage incidents after leaving the class/range.
