Man accidentally kills himself at Va. grocery store
While the man was waiting in the driver's seat of the vehicle, it appears he tried to unbuckle his seat belt and mistakenly hit the trigger of his handgun, shooting himself in the hip area.
He had several children in the car with him when he shot himself and died.
100% preventable with a competent holster.

That is very unfortunate. I feel so bad for the kids that witnessed that.

I feel bad for his wife and kids....not so much for him. Stupidity is often painful, and sometimes fatal. That's how it should be.

IMHO a holster is one of the most important safety devices for my handgun, in fact I dont own a handgun that does not have a holster including my training gun.
Secondly, I can not help but wonder if it was negligence or intentional. Prayers to the children.

A suicide shot to the hip would be new.

Some attempts to harm oneself were not intended to be lethal.

Thread hijack for a minute: I do know of someone who shot himself in the abdomen with a .22 in 'exactly the right spot and angle' so as to make sure he hit no vital organs (was a Doctor's Husband.) He then called police and advised they had been held up in an armed robbery. Come to find out his business was failing and he was trying to get sympathy and claim the money that was lost was stolen and not just mishandled.
Back on subject, this just sounds like a negligent discharge due to not having an appropriate holster or inattention to what he was doing. Very sad for the family.

It is very sad and happened not far (say less than 90 minutes or so) from where I live. It is so very sad. He hit a major blood vessel and bled out. Apparently he hit himself too high for a tourniquet, but according to the army medic in our VA gun forum had someone there had quick stop blood clotter and a pressure bandage he would have had a chance. Not that we ever want to have to use such knowledge and we should all have our weapons properly holstered but you don't have to be shot to be injured seriously where controlling bleeding is a major factor.
