Eat your veggies

Post by wharvey »

Heard something on the evening news tonight. The smart folks we elected may classify pizza as a vegetable! As long as there is at least 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce per slice. The decision is tied to the spending bill.

Reminds me of the old story of how the Mississippi legislature was going to change the value of pi to 3 since it is easier to use. (Also heard it attributed to Indiana.)

Be sure and eat your veggies! BTW, my favorite vegetable is ANGUS. "rlol"

Speaking of veggies, in the grocery store the other day I had to stop and do a double take.

In the soup section, there was Campbells Vegetable soup. And next to it was Campbells Vegetarian Vegetable soup. Apparently their regular veggie soup, even though its made of, you know, veggies...isn't strictly vegetarian because its in beef broth.

I don't know why, but it cracked me up that there is a difference between Vegetable soup and Vegetarian Vegetable soup.

I wonder if Campbell's was sued. I'm old enough to remember the hoopla over McD fries being cooked in a mixture containing beef fat for flavor, which apparently annoyed vegetarians and Hindus alike.

When I found out, my reaction was more like Captain Renault. "I'm shocked - shocked to find there's beef in the food at a burger joint!" ;-)

My wife bought a can of Campbells "healthy Choice" tomato soup, and I had a can of regular Campbells soup to compare it to. They both had the same exact amount of calories but the "healthy choice" actually had 1.5 grams of FAT compared to the ZERO grams of fat from the regular soup!!! How is it healthier then? Because the "healthy choice" had a little bit less sugar in it (which they apparently made up for with fat).

HA! So if I give my kids french fries with ketchup does that count as a "salad." "rlol" Gov't bull. Gotta love it, glad I am in charge of my kids nutrition and not them.

I was taught that that a tomato was a fruit.

I'm about as thrilled that my elected officials are passing judgement over school lunch menus as I am when they meddle in professional sports.
I don't think either are listed in the enumerated powers

It is. Avocados too. Who knew that a taco was basically a fruit sandwich, flavored with a little meat?

Also jalapenos and other peppers, plus beans and other legumes.

If you leave out the onions, a vegetarian burrito might not contain any vegetables.

Some of us are old enough to remember the outrage that folks had when ketchup was attempted to be declared a vegetable during the Reagan era.

The sad thing is that ConAgra-funded lobbyists were the ones that pushed to make these recent changes. It's amazing how organizations that are dedicated to the fast-food industry have so much influence in the selection of lunch menus for our kids. Then again, I don't fully comprehend why the FEDERAL gubbimint should be in the nutrition mandating business anyway. Seems like each state would be able to recommend selections based on the LOCAL crops and meats anyway.

How's the sodium compare? Maybe that's it.
I only get low sodium soups crackers etc (when I remember) ... blood pressure

Perhaps it was the "healthy fat" like a fish oil olive oil type which supposedly displaces the harmful fats when they start wrestling over a musical chair or something. (But I think someone just keeps bringing more chairs)

The musical chairs thing did work for high blood pressure "too much sodium" ... by consuming more calcium, potassium and less sodium I kept off blood pressure meds for about ten years, but finally had to start taking one ... which doctor said I may actually be able to quit again in a year or so. You have to be careful with Potassium/Sodium balance though . heart attacks/comas etc if you go too far in either direction
