I had a class the other day and I ran into something that I haven't seen before, so I just wanted to toss it out there and see what ya'll think.

Student was about the qualify for the CHL shoot and said he was going to shoot a TEC-9



I understand that you can qualify with any PISTOL 32 auto or above, technically the TEC-9 is classified by the BATF as a pistol...but I still felt it would be unfair to allow so I did not allow the student to qualify with the TEC-9.

What do you think? Did I do the right thing? And if I didn't would you allow a student to qualify with it?

Unless the weapon is unsafe, what authority do you have to restrict what they qualify with?

Can an instructor refuse to allow 1911 because they have better triggers than a DAO pistol? Isn't that an unfair advantage?

What if someone has aftermarket fiberoptic sights? Is that an unfair advantage over a student with OEM sights?

That was the first thing I thought of too..

What was unfair about it?

I felt that students should qualify with a pistol by the standard definition I the word versus a semi automatic machine pistol.

And no he was not planning on carrying the gun

I don't know much about this gun. What about it would ave been unfair? Is the barrel longer?

Many people qualify with a 9mm and then carry a .40 or .45. Many people qualify with a full size and then carry a subcompact.

I think you were wrong. Unless it was in an unsafe condition the student should have been allowed to use it. IMHO, it sounds as if you let your personal feelings cloud your professional judgement.

Anyway, I have shot a TEC-9 and I think they would be at a DIS-advantage based on the trigger, sights, and ergonomics.

If it is classified as a handgun, I allow it. It does not have to be the gun he will carry. The staff at our instructor class even teased some students about their 6" barrels.

I'm not trying to poke with a stick but I'm a stickler for the meaning of words. A machine pistol is a lightweight automatic submachine gun designed to be fired when held by one or two hands. A Tech 9 is a semiautomatic pistol that cosmetically appears similar to a machine pistol, same as a WSAR is cosmetically similar to a true AK 47 or an AR15 is to an M16.

In principle, I think i agree with you, and you probably did right, at least by the spirit of the qualification.

That said, I don't suppose its any different than qualifying for NSA with a 10" Dan Wesson with a 4x scope.

Besides, let 'em try with that thing. From what I've seen of them at the range, it would jam up so often they would have to requalify anyway.

Scopes are not allowed, but there is no restriction on the barrel length, conceal-ability, or practicality as long as it is a handgun. Technically, it seems you could use a Carbon-15 or Drako.

The carbon 15 would need to be in a non standard caliber. Neither 5.56mm nor 7.62mm is large enough to pass the .32 cal minimum.
