Hey all new to the forum. I have had my chl for a couple years now, and I just got my ffl about 8 months ago.
Looking to get my instructor license but I have a few questions what is everyone using for the revolver part of the test? Also, is there still time to apply for the 2012 classes? Thanks for any info

When I was there I used a SP101. Saw everything from a Colt Detective snubbie to several different makes w/ 6" barrels. Only real rule on the revolvers is nothing that will push off will be allowed on the range. The will check every gun. One was DQed in my line & had to borrow a gun.
You must shoot from an approved list of ammo. You will get it in an info pac before class.

I dont know about the deadline for registering for 12 classes.

Yea still trying to decide on a revolver. Prolly gonna try to send application out after the new year

I used a friend's .357 with a 6.5" barrel. I was asked not to leave powder burns on my target from the 3yd line Would have preferred to use my .41 but finding approved ammo, much less at a price I can afford, is impossible. They don't allow reloads so I borrowed a revolver.

Had a .45 hogleg a few shooters down. He passed right along with the rest of us. I would have like to have seen him shoot.

If you don't have a suitable revolver see if you can borrow one or make it a good excuse to go buy one. It's hard to beat a 4" .357 mag for an all-around revolver (IMO even though I don't own one). Load it up with .38s to qualify and you're good to go.

I was thinking a 357 would be a good revolver. Once I complete the class how long before I can start teaching? Also all the paperwork that you hand out for a class do we have to pay for that or does the state supply that for us?

You can teach immediately after you receive your instructor's certificate, which in most (all?) cases is handed to you after you pass your range qualifications on the last day.

You print your own class paper-work from downloadable forms from DPS. Class handouts are up to you. The chl-16 is available as a download, or can be purchased from DPS (I believe) or some instructors will sell printed copies (contact Crossfire on this forum).

Guess I need to stock up on printer ink lo. Looking forward ti getting the process started

Believe me, it's cheaper to take it to a copy place.

I used a 6" stainless GP100 to qualify with.. I was talking to one of the instructors on the range and he told me that I really should be shooting what I was going to carry. I told him I would not be carrying a revolver, but, if the only gun I had available was a relvolver, that 6" would do just fine.. He just chuckled.. I shot a 250 with it using double action at the 3 yard and single action for the 7 and 15.

Wheel gun for me was my SP101. semi was my truck gun. Kahr K40. Range officer looked at it & shrugged. When we went to the 7 he watched a couple of strings then went on down the line. At the 15 he stood behind me for all 10rds.

Im thinking of using a sp101 and my semi auto will be a s&w m&p 9mm. I heard that you don't have to have a certified range anymore any truth in that?

That is true, jgalvan. DPS no longer certifies ranges.

And you can't go wrong with your SP101 and M&P. Both excellent choices. Just make sure they see a little range time BEFORE you get to the DPS range. Equipment failure there can have some very unpleasant consequences.

Thanks crossfire gonna have to get some range time in with sp101 seeing how I haven't bought it. The m&p has seen a couple thousand rounds.
So I can set up a range behind my house. I own 10 acres in the country. Also would i ned to let the dps knowwhere I'm doing the shooting portion of my test?

That information is on the CHL-100 form, which you give to your students when the pass they course. They send it in to DPS.
