I guess you can use stats to show anything you want. This starts out with a story about cyclist getting in an argument and the suv driver shooting at him. The picture is heart warming showing the cyclist and family with the bike helmet with a hole through it. It mainly discusses North Carolina but brings up Florida's law.

Published in the New York Times - surprise, surprise.

I didn't bother to read the whole thing. Did the author cite any examples where the ability to carry a pistol saved a victim from being assaulted, raped, or killed?

Okie Dokie then.

Texas needs to buy a bus.
Instead of sending criminals who use a weapon to a Texas Prison, and taxpayers footing the bill for years, we could bus them all to New York, where they wouldn't "be allowed" to have a gun ... problem solved. I imagine they'd all behave well then. The comments made to that article indicate many people willing to teach the criminals about rainbows, unicorns, flowers and hugs as a crime deterrent. Perhaps they'll rent rooms in their houses to those getting off the bus so they can form close human relationships with them and share warm fuzzies and group hugs and Smores recipes.

New York, it's a nuther Country. (But they want converts to their cult, so they try to Police and change other places.)

This episode was on ME TV last week

The Rifleman 1962
Episode 154
The Anvil Chorus'
http://www.therifleman.net/episodes/epi ... 5&epid=154" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just then Nils turned the shotgun on Ed. "Ed...I warned ya'!" He made Ed hand over his gun. Ed wanted to know why Nils was giving him orders. "I'm taking Micah's place while he's gone up to Santa Fe. Until he gets back, I'm keepin' the peace! If I have to take every gun in town to do it!" The whole town laughed. Nils looked at Ed’s gun. “As a matter of fact, it might not be a bad idea!”
Rest of transcript at http://www.riflemanconnors.com/anvil_chorus.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I grew up on shows like that ... see http://www.therifleman.net/themes/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; PARABLES/LESSONS
as well as "Leave it to Beaver ...June Cleaver: "Well, Beve, God sees what you do even if no one else does"

TV sure teaches differently now.

Last night I was talking to my 15 year old daughter, who's wanting her license very badly. <G>

A friend of hers was there, and brought up the statistics on teen age wrecks and how many of them involve alcohol.
I calmly said, "I don't believe that" They both looked at me with a strange look. I said "Teen aged drinking is against the law. Drinking and driving is against the law. So I don't believe that it's that prevalent."
My daughter just gave me that look that says dad knows nothing and said... Dad, It's true. I told her then we needed to pass some stricter laws, that would fix it. She told me that if someone wanted to do something that stupid, another law wasn't going to stop them. I just grinned and told her to remember that, it's not just alcohol that pertains to. <G>

2,400 permit-holder convictions (Felony plus Misd.) over 5 years = 480 per year, over 240,000 permit holders = 0.20%
From that 2,400, 200 felonies over 5 years = 40 per year over 240,000 permit holders = 0.017%
This does not account for any multiple-count-convictions of the same permit holder...

Compare that to the 2009 NC crime data...
2010 population data (census) = 9,535,483
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/37000.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Index Crimes" (2010)
Murder, rape, robbery, agg assault = 34,033 = 0.357%
Burg., larceny, MV Theft = 325,568 = 3.41%
Total Felonies = 359,601 = 3.77%
http://crimereporting.ncdoj.gov/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So...

Permit holders are 94.7% less likely (1 - (0.2/3.77))to commit a crime (felony or misd) than the general population is to commit a felony only.
Permit holders are 99.6% less likely (1 - (0.017/3.77) to commit a felony vs the general population.

Yes.... the permit system is not perfect. But it's better than stripping the honorable 239,000+ citizens of their constitutional rights.

...my belief system doesn't respond to statistics, doesn't always line up with the law...and that's for me to live with...but I feel that a person who's law-abiding in other ways and hasn't misused a gun SHOULD carry a gun...that's the mindset I want behind anyone I find armed...I felt that way when I was a cop, and I still do...we knew there were a lot of "folks" carrying concealed...and mine was an OC state with no permit other than the "courtesy" card the Chief would hand out for carrying concealed...I never once heard of an otherwise standup citizen in our town misusing the gun...we had detectives get drunkey and wave 'em around, we had CD police act cowboy with theirs...but a good citizen who feels strongly enough to carry knowing it could cost him a fine and confiscation(back then) is NOT going to go looking for trouble...fast forward to today...and we CHL toters are the most trouble-free, law-abidin' responsible in the herd...
...the bad guys are going to carry regardless...the more out there armed to resist 'em...the better for us all...I encourage everyone who'll stand still long enough to go get their permit...but I know those who carry without a permit today and am just as comfortable with them as I would be if the High Sheriff were sittin' by me...

I just LOVE that idea! And, just so no one feels left out, we should send a few of them to Illinois too! Take care of Texas prison overcrowding, and make the liberal yankees happy too. What could be better?

NYC or DC. Either is fine by me. Make it a condition for early release.

"We'll let you out of prison, but a condition of your parole is you're not allowed back in Texas. Sign here. Thank you. Now, would you like a one way bus ticket to NYC, DC, Chicago or LA?"

In the end, most researchers say the scattershot results are not unexpected, because the laws, in all likelihood, have not significantly increased the number of people carrying concealed weapons among those most likely to commit crimes or to be victimized.
So the people who end up committing felonies are going to carry concealed, whether it is legal or not. It seems like an interesting paradox that the same government that, according to the article, cannot police the concealed licenses very well and keep them out of the hands of felons as well as alcohol and drug abusers will do a much better job of policing everyone when concealed firearms a totally banned. Makes sense to me. :roll:

I'm kind of liking this one...how much does a one-way bus ticket to NYC, Chicago, or LA cost? Bet its cheaper than incarcerating them... :biggrinjester:
