I have had my CHL for about 6 months now and have come across a couple of situations where I have questions about carrying, or leaving my firearm in the car.


1) My 3 year old daughter attends a daycare that is connected to a church. I know that I cannot carry in the daycare/ school to pick her up or drop her off. But, can I leave my pistol in my truck while I drop off or run in to get her? Do I need to be parker a certain distance away from the doorway? Or should i just leave my firearm at home?

2) Out to dinner, carry into the restaurant but then GF decides after dinner she wants to go to a bar for a drink. I know the 51% rule so I have been returning to the house to drop off firearm..... Can I leave the pistol in the car while in the bar? Can car be on the same property as bar? Or should I continue to take it back to the house?

3) How about public parks or parks at schools? The Houston zoo or Museums? Reliant Stadium or Minute Maid Park?

Is her daycare a true school?
If not, then you can carry there.

If it is a school, you may leave it in the car when you go in, but please be sure to secure it for safety.

My rule, not the law, if a bar is involved AND i will drink even a sip, the gun stays home.
I would not want to be in a situation where I had truly 1 drink, totally sober and had to use my weapon and someone says "he was drinking!"

the law on this one, I don't think says anything, but I could be wrong. Again, leave it at home if you are to be drinking. Be Safe!

As long as you are not entering a premises (building for all intensive purposes), you can carry. As long as there is not a school function happening there.

Is there a professional sporting event going on?
is there a school function going on?
If yes to either, then NO, you cannot carry there.
If NO, then you possibly could, but check for 30.06 signs, and be 100% sure there is not a professional or school function happening.

It is a School that is part of the church.

And on the sporting events, I know I cannot carry inside but what about leaving it in the Car?

Parks (broad term if including ballparks, Amusement Parks, parks at schools etc)
Excluding professional sports parks, Amusement parks as defined by the Statutes, ...
Generally: Parks people go to be outdoors like a city park with picnic tables, trees, playground equipment for kids, barbeque pit, walking trails, play Frisbee, go jogging etc
no USACE owned parks or parking lots.
US Army Corps of Engineers "owns" the land some city/county/State parks are on ... pretty much all "other" City/County/State parks are OK assuming no other disqualifying factor.

Here's a list of the statutory off-limits locations. Note, these locations use the term "premises" as statutorily defined to be a building or portion of a building. This does not include parking lots.

Considering the statistics, it might be a good idea to leave the car at home too.

Interesting twist here. I often walk my dogs through the walkig trails at Grapevine Lake and I believe that land may be owned by the USACE (Army Corp of Engineers). Is that a no carry zone? Access is all outdoors and therefore no 30.06 signs are posted at any of the entrances that I have ever seen. If anyone knows please fill me in.

Grapevine Lake has been discussed here before, under Fort Worth District ... I'll try to locate it ...... someone asked director for permission, was denied ...

No 30.06 signs are required on USACE property, even though firearms are forbidden there ... as 30.06 is a "Texas" thing, and the US Army disregards State Laws.

The "House of Representatives" de-funded enforcement for 1 fiscal year if I recall .... but it's still illegal.

So we need to call/ remind people about the House and Senate Bills to change the Regulations

all city owned or leased property no matter who the current tennant is is non 30:06 applicable that includes ALL houston museums, any thing in hermann park as in museum of natural science miller out door theatre the zoo and ALL the theatres downtown IE. verizon wireless jones hall and wortham center. these facilities are NOT 30:06 applicable however being as you will beat the rap, you may not beat the ride, not withstanding school functions there are non applicable as well. the only places are spelled out in the penal code/law but do NOT include the gun shows at GRB as it is a city owned facility and the rental is short term and therefore is non 30:06. but as everyone else has said my advice and thoughts are worth what you paid for them
