Yeah, "looking" at one can cause it to "go off"
The gun accidentally fired

...

"The person was just looking at the gun, ...

and it discharged,"
Heavier triggers are needed so you can look at them harder ... oughtta be a law ...

That's them guns which if you set them on a table and go off and take a bath or something, they'll just go off all by themselves I think

From the article's tone ... Obviously the Sheriff there doesn't want to prosecute the negligent homicide person ....

I mean yeah, it won't bring life back and the negligent guy probably feels bad and now knows what a trigger does .... so perhaps the County doesn't want to pay to support him for years ... but many (most) "accidents" are caused by negligence.

Sad in any case ... unless the guy is getting away with murder ...

Sometimes small town Sherrifs get overruled by the district attorneys when prominent families decide to call in markers. But, absent any malice or intent, would justice be served by putting the "shooter" away for 5-10 years? Wouldn't you also need to prosecute the owner of the weapon for making it available to someone who obviously shouldn't have been handling it? Now, you've got two trials to pay for. Ah, Justice.. what to do?
