Hey guys, i've been out of the loop a little bit. My ex-wife started going to college and i met her on campus to pick up my kids while she went to class, and of course i was carrying. From what i understand, Texas law allows you to carry on the the property and premises of a school, given that it is not inside one of the buildings. I was in the parking lot the whole time, so i wasn't worried about it. However, where are we at with campus carry? I lost track of the progress and can't really find much reading on it. I'm thinking about going back to school, but not if i can't carry. My G.I. bill is good for 10 years

You're correct, you can be on the grounds w. your CHL/pistol, but not inside the buildings.

The campus carry bill didn't pass last session. I would imagine it'll be submitted again in spring 2013 for another go.

the handbook for my college that I work at says you cannot even have them in parking lot. I dunno. I am inside and cannot have it in here that is all I know. I hope the unarmed security guards are tougher than they look if we get a crazy in here.

wow that blows. I'm sure it's been beat to death, but i just don't understand it. Now i'm faced with:

1) follow the law and not carry. Well all know how that can turn out (VT?)
2)Not follow the law
3)Not go to school

In order to nit pick, I believe Texas law defines property as the grounds, and premises as building (not to include parking structures or parking lots)

So to get really nit picky about it, it is currently legal to carry on the property, but not the premises.

If I'm wrong, a lawyer type should be along shortly to smack my wrist.

typically this only applies to a student, faculty, staff etc at the college - it DOES NOT apply (and legally CANNOT apply at a state college) to an average CHL citizen who is on the grounds but not inside the buildings. A public college has no legal authority to do anything to you if you're not under their thumb as student, professor, etc. Even trespassing technically is not possible on public college grounds ... see PC 30.06 (e), but IS possible on private college grounds ... of course either scenario could be a beat the rap, not the ride situation depending on the knowledge of the local law enforcement to CHL & trespassing laws

"11. Possession of weapons on University property. Examples: knives, firearms, explosives, incendiary bombs, etc. Exceptions to this rule are licensed peace officers."

I assume that since the school collects money for parking permits to park in their parking lots and pays to maintain the parking lots, sidewalks, and grounds that all is their property. I will not say what I do, but I will say I do not carry a gun inside the campus buildings. All I have to say.

well i know i wasn't doing anything wrong earlier, i was mainly asking if i campus carry as a student was legal yet.

if i do decide to go back to school, and i officially become a student at this college, can i leave my weapon secured in my vehicle? honestly, this seems very childish and pathetic to me. I'm a full grown adult and a combat veteran. I'm licensed to carry a concealed weapon and I'm going to school to further my education......at the expense of my 2nd amendment right....? That's bull if i've ever seen it before. I'm very disappointed with today's society.

AR is right. Beefmobile, you're EXACTLY the type of person who needs to be talking to our reps.

The antis portray campus carry as drunken 18 year old frat daddies being allowed to carry guns. Even though it's blatantly false, that's the image they push.

You are exactly the counter we need. Someone we trusted with a rifle over there, but won't allow in a classroom with a chl here.

on the other hand, guys........i don't think it's said enough how thankful we are (or should be) in Texas to have what we do. Sure, our rights as Americans are 'infringed' in many ways. And sure, being able to openly pack a Glock on our hip with no restrictions, complaining liberals, or fear of lawsuits would be GREAT......but the fact is, as Texans, we have a lot of rights that many Americans don't. As sad as it is, i know, but it's fact. Imagine the amount of whining some of us on this forum would be doing in Los Angeles.....or D.C......or New York. It's complete communism in those place....BUT.... As much as i'd rather have more, more, more rights given back to me, i'm still very thankful for the ones i have now....for now

That statement in the handbook is just stating a policy. They can fire you for not following policy, but you can't be arrested for it as long as you don't carry in the buildings. If they are a private instituion they could prevent you from carrying anywhere on the property by giving you effective notice in accordance with 30.06. That statement in the handbook does not qualify as effective notice.

this is true. my workplace has a very similarly worded 'policy'. No 30.06, no wording other than general "no dangerous weapons allowed including guns, knives, etc". I still carry.....but i don't work at a school
