A married couple who lived in DeRidder, Louisiana, with 10 capuchin monkeys have decamped to an undisclosed location in Texas for fear of the monkeys being seized by authorities.

Louisiana has been cracking down on owners of exotic animals, requiring licensing and inspection of facilities.

Obviously they have eliminated crime, poverty, and disease and have nothing better to do with their huge budget surpluses.

There actually is an underground network of owners of exotic animals who circulate information and help each other avoid possible seizure of their animals.

Speaking seriously, I can see both sides of the issue. We don't need government using public resources to enforce the wishes of "animal rights" ninnies, but some of these exotic animals are dangerous or mistreated.

I remember a few years ago some yahoo in this area had a tiger in a poorly constructed pen, and it ate a kid for lunch.

I was reading about the capuchin monkeys a couple of weeks ago. These are the monkeys that you used to see as the "organ grinder" monkeys dressed in a bell cap suit holding a cup for gathering money.

Apparently there is still a market for them as pets and, sometimes trained for performing certain tasks for disabled people. They sell for several thousand dollars. There are probably more ripoff artists tring to sell them.

Regardless, a dangerous animal needs to be in an enclosure where it can't get out and unauthorized persons can't get in. It just makes sense. Disney cartoons have made people think that animals are cuddly and harmless—especially little kids.

BTW, quite a few really dangerous animals like lions and tigers have escaped from inadequate enclosures. Usually they end up being shot by police.

If someone who is not an infant intentionally goes into an enclosure with a dangerous animal, well, Darwin explained how that works.

The first part is easier than the second, especially with the trend to more "natural" enclosures in zoos. It's one thing to stop a polar bear from getting out of its pen. It's another to stop humans from climbing walls to get inside the polar bear habitat.

Thanks. That photo is priceless.

It is beyond my imagination how someone can think that bears are cuddly. For one thing, they are fairly scruffy and dirty when you see them up close in real life. The one in that photo does not look much like Yogi Bear.

That's the crazy woman over in Berlin. I guess she survived. I wonder if they ever found out why she jumped in there.

I think "crazy woman" is enough explanation. Some news stories said she was depressed but if she was trying to commit suicide it's bad manners to change your mind in the middle.

Not to mention the trauma infliceted on that poor, cuddly little bear...
