Douglas "Butch" Burgess Jr., 62, had a sign posted on the front door of his house on Pelham Street in Greer that said: “PLAY IT SAFE – ROB SOMEONE ELSE – WE HAVE GUNS AND WLL NOT HESITATE TO SHOOT YOU.”
He shot the robber, but the robber, a woman, also shot him. He died at the scene, she died later at the hospital.

Sad, veteran homeowner died too, but ...
more proof that criminals can't read, or that the font should be larger.

I know that its a very cold consolation but at least that is one robber who will not be perpetrating a crime on anyone else. There is nothing saying the robber wouldn't have shot him anyway had he not resisted. Its the lesson of Flight 93. My salute to the man for defending his home and my sincere condolences to his family.

No warning shots and no signs like this. The BGs were given advanced notification and knew what to expect. Who knows, maybe they went in expecting to kill him so they could take his guns.
The fact that my house is not their house is a fair indication someone is not welcome in my house unless I invite them in. My locked doors are the only warning they will get. Well, other than the barking dogs.

...I'm sorry for him dying...but the saber rattling isn't wise and doesn't work against those whose thought processes are muddled and/or can't read the signs...a blinding flash of gunfire is all they'll understand...all signs like that do is give juries too much to consider...

I learned the other day at the Arlington Citizens Police Academy that it is actually a rising trend. In fact at one time the cell block that they had assigned to women only had six beds, now it has 20.

Meth doesn't discriminate based on gender.
From what I've read, the assailant was shot in the upper leg, I assume the femoral artery, and died from the single wound.
Rest In Peace Mr. Burgess.

A thug is a thug, male or female. It's been that way for years.
We had some really bad female's back 30 years ago when I was a LEO that would just as soon fight you as look at you. And they would fight dirty. They were usually either druggies, alcoholics or both.
One female I had to fight one night to get her into the car even after she was handcuffed. Then she fought a female officer in the squad room when she went to search her. Finally I ended up having to spray her with CS (precursor to OC/pepper spray) to get her back in the car to take her to lock-up. Her arms were covered in scars from knife and bottle fights. Funny thing was, she was not the meanest and most ruthless woman in town. There were a couple of females who were druggies and were just downright evil. They would steal, rob, sell themselves for drugs, etc, didn't matter what.

I suspect to a certain mindset, that's a challenge.
