Detroit citizens no longer rely on police as self-defense killings skyrocket

Signs that vigilantism was taking hold in the city came earlier, around Memorial Day 2009, when former federal agent Alvin Davis decided he’d had enough of the break-ins at his mother’s home on the east side. She called the police again and again, but the brazen robberies continued. Davis, then a 32-year-old Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, snapped.

Prosecutors said he spent days chasing and harassing the teenagers who were allegedly robbing his mother, even shoving his federally issued firearm into one of their mouths. No one was killed, but by the time he was done, Davis had racked up charges of unlawful imprisonment and assault. In August 2010, he was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison.

Somehow, the police are too busy to do anything about the thugs that run the streets but have more than enough time to prosecute someone who was trying to help restore a balance of power. I spent almost a year working in the Detroit suburbs. It is worse than the article's description.

I guess OCP (Omni Consumer Products) and RoboCop are just around the corner.

Now, add to that the courts letting a large number of criminals right back out onto the streets. Even when the LEOs do put criminals behind bars what does it really accomplish if the courts don't follow through?

This wasn't in Detroit but a few years ago, my MIL's home was broken into. The police had plenty of evidence and promptly arrested the individuals responsible, however, that very same week they were right back out on the street and literally walking right through her yard on a regular basis. She moved about a year or so later and they were still out on the streets.

I keep thinking it would be a good investment to go buy a few square blocks of Detroit real estate, clear it to the dirt and wait. Couldn't cost much. They 'ain't making any more of it and the only way for it to go is up.

I wouldn't be so sure. One of the reasons that Detroit is the way it is comes from the ultra-high level of corruption. The corrupt powers that be could decide that your bare dirt was the reason for all of the urban decay around you and apply a tax to your ground to cover the associated cleanup. Of course, like all of the clean up money before it, your tax dollars would end up in the pockets of the crooks.

Don't laugh.. there is more truth in this than you believe.

Corrupt governments can find a tax or fee for anything that you or I could imagine...and more.

Not in the least surprising if you put it in an historical context. Authoritarian collectivist governments always punish political crimes --crimes that challenge the aspirations of The State-- with greater ferocity than property crimes or crimes of violence. So, for example, New Jersey will give a law abiding citizen years in prison for a trivial political offense (such as improperly locking a gun away in a car trunk, or possessing hollow point ammo), while giving thugs with criminal records a slap on the wrist when they're caught on the street with a gun in their waistband. To these "liberal" minds, there are the elites (themselves) and those who must the instructed by the elites in the proper way to serve The State --the rest of us. The "rest of us" includes the unenlightened bourgeoisie oppressors (people like us), and the downtrodden, who are our victims. Thus, only those who seek to live at the expense of others, including thugs and criminals, are true "victims" worthy of sympathy.

Corrupt regimes also look the other way if someone pays bribes and go after people who make waves.
