This morning I was listening to my scanner (its a hobby and helps me stay informed on what is happening in my neighborhood) this morning when I heard a call for a residential alarm that really perked my ears. Dipatch was sending PD to a house to check a report of alarm, she advised responding officers that the residence has a "CAUTION" on it of 8 cameras around house, they listen to scanner and the cameras will record sound if they are close to the cameras. This is not the only time I heard a disturbing "CAUTION" being broadcast to responding officers. I heard one a couple of weeks ago that also had me alarmed. Dispatch let responding officers know that the resident had a gun safe with at least 25 long guns, 8 semi-auto rifles, 7 pistols and lots of ammo for all the weapons at last count and that the resident has a valid CHL and is known to carry a firearm most all the time.

Since I am firearms owner, listen to a scanner, and I reload for all of my firearms except 22lr it looks like to me that I may have a caution put out on me. I have a few questions that you might be able to answer.

#1) Where and how is my city getting all of this information?

#2) If a LEO checks this post out, should dispatch be giving this information out over the air for anyone with a digital scanner to hear.

#3) Does having a camera that records sound and listening to a scanner make this a "CAUTION" to responding officers? WHY?

#4) We who have a CHL, have been fingerprinted, checked by FBI, NCIC, TCIC and local LEO's should we be deemed a "CAUTION"?

#5) Am I being overly paranoid?

I know my local Mayor is a member of MAIG with Bloomberg and is up for election but like in the last few elections has run unopposed or had a person who was so way out there running against him.

I'm not an expert, but my guess is that the gun inventory is the result of a previous police response to his residence, and the number and general descriptions of the guns were because the resident had given the police the inventory while they were checking to make sure nothing had been stolen.

Note that there is no further detailed description, such as make, model, serial#, etc. As to his CHL status, that's no different than when you get pulled over, and it comes up on the squad car's computer that you have a CHL. Also, the details about the guns may have been related to the fact that the homeowner was not home, and the place was being burgled.......possibly arming the burglars.

It could be something more nefarious than that, but I think the odds are against it.......Occam's Razor, and all that.

So true about the computer in the car but why put it on the air where everyone can hear it? It would sure make it easy for someone to target that resident. Also FYI no other local including Grapevine puts that info my city does over the air. GV tells officers to check their computer for important info on the call. What about letting the officers know about cmeras that record sound?

Well, I don't really know. I was just trying to offer a possible answer. If person A had asked me for person B's phone number, and I knew that B was in the habit of recording all phone calls, I would warn A to be careful of what he said. We live in a litigious society. And again, that's just one possible answer. You may be entirely right, and this really does stink.
