Certified to teach what? Nothing about being a teacher makes you ineligible for a CHL. Unless you are a convicted felon, teaching other wanna be felons how to commit crimes...

Nonsense. Sign up and take the class. They must've been confused by the fact that teachers can not carry while they're at the school. Good Luck!

I heard of a guy who won't teach chl classes to persons who voted for Obama because in his opinion, it showed mental problems or something. :smilelol5:

Perhaps whoever told you that mistook certified for certifiable ...

You can't carry AT school without permission FROM the school/school district, and I doubt they'd grant permission such as Harrold School District does with CERTAIN teaches who take additional training/get filled in on the school's plans etc.... however "being a teacher" does not disqualify one from getting a CHL.... unless they voted for ... :smilelol5:

Texas School District Will Let Teachers Carry Guns
Published August 15, 2008
In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and must use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Couldn't or shouldn't?

Others have already said why teacher doesn't matter for CHL. However, your CHL might matter to the school. There have been rumors of ISD getting CHL information and using to discriminate in promotions and retention. No proof but something to consider. Also remember thatMany ISD have PD and there's pretty good anecdotal evidence some use their PD to do backgroung checks on employees, even if that's not completely kosher.

Don't let this stop you. Just be aware of potential traps.

:iagree:

I would be cautious in telling anyone about getting or having chl. Make sure it is someone you can trust. Remember the moto, concealed means concealed. That goes for my plastic as well. I work with a couple of people who are anti gun and in a large corporation that has no gun policy for work which I abide. I wouldn't trust the anti's or future employers to treat me fairly if they are anti gun. I don't think my company would discriminate against me for having a chl, but that could always change. So I am very selective in who I talk with about guns, chl etc. especially at a work environment that by statute or policy is anti gun. Find people you can trust for good advice, this is a great place for that!

As long as you don't commit a felony by bringing your gun into a school building, or cross the district's policy IF they won't let employees have firearms in their vehicles (remember, schools are exempt from the new law that prohibits employers from stopping employees from having firearms in their parking lots) - and since most districts' local policies merely copy the state's examples, they usually don't, then it shouldn't matter to the school district whether you have a CHL or not.

Licensed professional employees (teachers, administrators, librarians) have a background check done every year anyway - so, having an ISD's PD also do a background check isn't going to tell them anything they don't already know. But, FWIW, does anyone know if having a CHL shows up on a CCH (computerized criminal history)? Any LEO's want to chime in?

I'm pretty sure it shows up in TCIC which the commercial background check mills can't legally access but the PD can.

CHL status is only released to law enforcement agencies.

Isn't that what he said? The ISD police department can easily find out CHL status.
