Texas School District Will Let Teachers Carry Guns
Published August 15, 2008
In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and must use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Others have already said why teacher doesn't matter for CHL. However, your CHL might matter to the school. There have been rumors of ISD getting CHL information and using to discriminate in promotions and retention. No proof but something to consider. Also remember thatMany ISD have PD and there's pretty good anecdotal evidence some use their PD to do backgroung checks on employees, even if that's not completely kosher.
Don't let this stop you. Just be aware of potential traps.
As long as you don't commit a felony by bringing your gun into a school building, or cross the district's policy IF they won't let employees have firearms in their vehicles (remember, schools are exempt from the new law that prohibits employers from stopping employees from having firearms in their parking lots) - and since most districts' local policies merely copy the state's examples, they usually don't, then it shouldn't matter to the school district whether you have a CHL or not.bayouhazard wrote:Others have already said why teacher doesn't matter for CHL. Besides which, it'll give the lounge lizards something else to gossip about!brelmore11 wrote:thats what I was thinking...thanks for the info!
I'm pretty sure it shows up in TCIC which the commercial background check mills can't legally access but the PD can.n5wd wrote:Licensed professional employees (teachers, administrators, librarians) have a background check done every year anyway - so, having an ISD's PD also do a background check isn't going to tell them anything they don't already know. But, FWIW, does anyone know if having a CHL shows up on a CCH (computerized criminal history)? Any LEO's want to chime in?
teachers need to carry more than anyone!! i have a daughter in high school and its rough!brelmore11 wrote:I was told today that I couldn't get my CHL because I am a certified teacher...Is this true?
CHL status is only released to law enforcement agencies.boba wrote:I'm pretty sure it shows up in TCIC which the commercial background check mills can't legally access but the PD can.n5wd wrote:Licensed professional employees (teachers, administrators, librarians) have a background check done every year anyway - so, having an ISD's PD also do a background check isn't going to tell them anything they don't already know. Isn't that what he said? The ISD police department can easily find out CHL status.Keith B wrote:CHL status is only released to law enforcement agencies.boba wrote:I'm pretty sure it shows up in TCIC which the commercial background check mills can't legally access but the PD can.n5wd wrote:Licensed professional employees (teachers, administrators, librarians) have a background check done every year anyway - so, having an ISD's PD also do a background check isn't going to tell them anything they don't already know.
