My grandfather is moving and has to leave his heavy gun safe (guessing ~30 gun size) behind. He'd give it to me, but I have no idea how I'd get it from New Mexico to Texas. He mentioned they had to install it with a hydraulic lift. I think it's too heavy for me to move myself with a U-haul, so I'd need in-home to in-home (or at least garage) service.

How would one go about shipping such a heavy safe? I assume it will cost hundreds of dollars, but may be worth it vs buying one new.

Contact a locksmith out in his town and see if they know a moving company that moves safes. They should know one and approximately how much it will cost. What city in New Mexico?

There is also a website (that I can't find right now) that takes bids from different independent couriers to ship large items. My Dad got a 47 GMC truck shipped from Utah to Houston for about $600. If its a high quality 30 gun safe it would be worth shipping for sure.

I paid $300 just to move a 1,000 pound safe from Academy to my house. A distance of about 3 miles. They wanted an extra $50 to bolt it to the floor.

Those prices I found were based on a few listings I found in google search for:

They might not be typical. I guess all I can do is post it and see what offers I can get.

My brother, my dad, and I moved my dad's 900 pound safe with a big dolly and a U-Haul with a hydraulic rear lift. The dolly had extra wheels that were back at an angle so it could be rolled while on the dolly. A few guys with the proper equipment and leverage could do this.

700-1000 # safe can be moved with a good dolly, golf balls and your friends. Most rental trailers have a 1750 to 3000 # capacity for single axles and 3500-6000 for tandems. An inclosed trailer is great because you can tie it to the sides in transit.
I have moved several safes for myself, family and friends. The last one was when I added a 42 gun that weighed 880. My 15 year old grandson and I had the vendor load it on my flatbed truck. We put ramps to the front porch and using a all steel piano dolly moved it into the front room of the house in about 25 minutes. There was a safe company in Longview advertising a couple years ago that they would move your safe and it would be half price if you purchased it from them.
