...he knows that it's a privilege to have a passport, and that it's not entitled to us by citizenship...even an ignoramus like me can find that out by a bit of research...but that's not the point...if AA Denver passed the citizen through...AA Dallas should have, too...that's absurd to get a family in mid-journey and start getting picky...

Unless things have changed (and since I haven't travelled out of the country in a couple of years, they might have), the only passport scan that mattered was the one right before you were leaving the country. The last time we flew to Belize, we flew into Houston and had a several hour layover to meet up with some other folk. Before boarding at Houston, we had to have our passports scanned - when I mentioned that they had already done that at DFW (and we were on through tickets), the ticket clerk explained that it had to happen at the port of embarkation. If for some reason we didn't pass their scan (and I don't honestly know if I had a passport with a chip in it then or not - I suspect not, but they did run it through the optical scanner) then we wouldn't have been let on board.

My new passport has a thick front cover for I assume some kind of RFID inside. Maybe AA has scanners that read this, and for these two passports it didn't work. But it would sound like this would ruin a lot of vacations, as no one would know their RFID didn't work until it was to late.

Or, as a friend suggested, this was an unhappy AA employee, who has been forced to accept lower pay since the bankruptcy.

...that's what seems most likely...if the passport scanned OK in Denver...it should have scanned OK in Dallas...just the Dad's was "bad" in Dallas...it smells of bad attitude on the employee's part...

Probably thick from the metal lining. They have a thin metal lining to prevent the tag from being read when the passport is closed.

Denver is not an international gateway for AA. DFW is. Perhaps there is a difference in training for the two stations.
