Hey guys,

I've had my CHL for a couple of weeks now and I love carrying. I have an office job in an office building where no 30.06 sign is posted, so naturally I carry all day at my desk.

I'm wondering what my rights are in terms of my right to carry on this premises. A couple of questions:

• If my employer asks whether or not I have a CHL, how can I answer? Can I lie?
• If anyone asks me, "What is that sticking out of your shirt?", what should I say?
• Assuming I do not know for sure whether or not my employer knows I am carrying (let's say they make that assumption that I am carrying with no proof), are they allowed to ask me not to bring my CCW to work? If so, am I legally required to follow this order?
• Assuming the previous question's answer is YES, who has the authority at my workplace to request this? The property owner? A certain rank of employee (CEO, Manager, etc)?

Also if there is anything else I should be aware of as a newbie CHL holder please let me know! I am aware of the specific types of businesses or facilities I am not allowed to carry on, as well as the 30.06 sign.

Note that I am not looking for legal advice here, I don't particularly care to speak with a lawyer. I just want some advice & facts from the knowledgeable people here on the forum.

The first thing I would be concerned about would be your employer's written HR policies, and whether or not they have a written policy against carrying a firearm in the workplace. If they do have such a policy (and my guess is that most do), you're not breaking the law, but you could get fired if found out. Is that a risk you're willing to take?

Secondly, if you really can't abide by the idea of being disarmed at work, carry an easily concealed gun like a PM9/CM9 or LC9, and then dress around it. The one piece of advice you'll keep getting on this board is that you will have to make sartorial compromises to maintain concealment, and to not let your fashion "pride" get in the way of that. Failure to be willing to make some concessions in that area means that you're not that serious about carrying your gun. Also, take into account whatever dress code requirements your job has. Wear shirts in darker colors with printed patterns if possible, and pick button up collared shirts over polo shirts, as the patterns and the fabric help to break up the outline of a pistol........if there is one.

Lastly, after you put it on, forget about it and leave it alone! Don't keep picking at it or patting it to make sure it's still there. The best way to get busted is to act self-conscious about it. If inquiring minds insist on asking what's under your shirt, tell them that it's an insulin pump, or a portable heart monitor, or a Leatherman tool, or a cellphone, or a can of mace.......no wait......belay that last one.

First thing, Texas is an at will state, meaning that your employer can terminate your position at any time without cause.

Just Because you have a CHL doesn't mean you are carrying in the building. What happens if your boss is looking for a range buddy? Now if you fess up, you lied to your boss, not a good thing.

If so, am I legally required to follow this order?Yes and Yes. Its private property. Either a 30.06 sign or a verbal warning is good enough. Technically, something in regards to no weapons in the employee handbook would be good enough to get you fired and a possible ride to the local PD.

I'm not sure a property owner acting as a landlord can prohibit this, but I could be mistaken. The CEO could definitely make all locations put up a 30.06 sign, but whomever has regional or local control of your specific office could do it, if they have said authority.

Also if there is anything else I should be aware of as a newbie CHL holder please let me know! I am aware of the specific types of businesses or facilities I am not allowed to carry on, as well as the 30.06 sign.

Yup, no reason at all is needed to fire people, and that's the reason some might use "No reason at all, I just felt like firing someone randomly, I don't discriminate, he was just unlucky that day"

I don't have things sticking out of my shirt.
They also never ask what's in my pockets, in my boots or elsewhere on my body.

Boxers or briefs?

(A) entry on the property by a license holder with a concealed handgun was forbidden; or
(B) remaining on the property with a concealed handgun was forbidden and failed to depart.
(b) For purposes of this section, a person receives notice if the owner of the property or someone with apparent authority to act for the owner provides notice to the person by oral or written communication.

As far as firing you .... You can be fired for wearing mismatched socks. or for no reason at all .... he has that freedom, other than the few reasons which violate Federal/State law

You are also free to quit and go to work elsewhere because your boss parts his hair wrong, wears mismatched socks (hey, I have a pair just like that) ... or for no reason at all ... it's Texas

Bosses can be nosey, even insulting, My ex boss and I both realized my worth and he fired me and asked me to come back 4 or 5 times over the 25 years I worked with him.
We had fun with it, (I did anyway)
He hated beards so ... I grew a beard of course
and he said (trying to insult me into shaving) "You look like a homeless person"
So I thanked him
He asked why I thanked him and I said him comparing me to all powerful God the creator is a real compliment

If a Kahr PM9 is too big for your pocket, get a Seecamp ... expensive, but it's concealable.
Or get a derringer or smaller pistol, or get 3 or 4 of them, one for each pocket
Or, get a tailor to enlarge/fix your pockets.
Or, carry a smaller more concealable pistol IWB tuckable with no visible "clips" on the belt showing
Wear a good gun belt
Or use a belly band/thunderwear or
some other method which doesn't allow things to stick out of your shirt.

My typical day I wear a Glock IWB, a Keltec 11 and a Keltec PF9 in front pockets, Also a Seecamp and an AMT Backup if I'm wearing my jacket too... unless I'm going to church when I carry my Taurus PT92 also, just in case

I'm new but that sounds like the oral notice we talked about in class.

I failed to address this in my above post, but generally yes, oral notice given by someone with the authority to do so would constitute proper notice. On the other hand, I don't believe that you are required by law to answer the question truthfully if asked by anybody.......as long as the asker is not a LEO in the performance of his/her duties.

As RPB pointed out, the question should be treated as if they were asking whether you had on boxers or briefs. "No" is all the answer the question deserves.

All of that said, conceal your gun, and none of this will be an issue.....which leads to the next part: most people who get a CHL are much more concerned about "printing" when they first start carrying than they really need to be. They are operating on the false assumption that most people are very observant of small details about everyone around them, and that they will notice that the CHLer has something under his/her shirt. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most people out there are about as observant as a tree. They won't even notice that you have something under your shirt, let alone speculate as to what it might be.
