Let me see if I have this right.

They burn Christian Bibles, no problem.

They burn the US flag, well, you have to consider their culture.

They burn, and mutilate, and parade the remains of our troops in the street.

But we burn a couple of their lousy books?

And to top that off, you should never - ever - have a Bible in Theater. I am not sure how they even get away with Sunday Services.

Not gonna ever happen.

No way is America, even in its currently-beaten-up state, ever going to allow our soldiers to be handed over to another government for trial in this circumstance. Not going to happen.

The article referenced is just pot-stirring.

Agreed--it would be outrageous to allow the soldiers to be tried under Sharia.

However, I think that the soldiers responsible should be held accountable for their actions, under UCMJ law. Do I care that a Koran was burned? Nope. It isn't the act that angers me, it's the principle. American soldiers are representatives of our wonderful country, and should know better than to act in a way that brings a bad name to her. Burning the Korans didn't do any good except to stir up trouble and possibly make the situation more dangerous that it was.

When I was in Iraq the 2nd time, one of the Army soldiers that was on my base got into trouble for kicking a Koran through the dirt. It was intentional and mean spirited, and I didn't feel the least bit sorry for him when he was tried under UCMJ for his irresponsible behavior. Fact is that most Americans don't care for Islam, the Koran, or anything related... but as Americans we need to provide the example of religious tolerance (to the extent that it's safe to do so, IE., zero tolerance for Islamic Fundamentalists, etc).

I understand your assumption, even though it is unfounded and incorrect... you only know what you know.. :cheers2:

if you do want to believe what you read, stop reading what Hamid Karzai is saying, al jazeera is saying.. because so far from what i just read in this thread.. The guessing is farther from fact then you know.

couple more days at most and I think the report will come out...before making statements like the one above, you might want to hold off a bit.

I've heard the following from a friend in theatre:

Two soldiers, working with two civilian Afghan counterparts, were doing their normal jobs of destroying sensitive documents by placing cardboard boxes containing said documents in a furnace.

The soldiers had been given two cardboard boxes and were ordered to incinerate them. The boxes are typically sealed and placed in the furnace sealed as the items in them are, again, sensitive.

After placing one of the boxes in the furnace, one of the soldiers noticed after the outer cardboard burned away that the box contained Korans. He then reached into the furnace multiple times to retrieve the Korans from the flames, burning himself in the process. The Afghan civilians saw him pulling the Korans from the fire and went and told others when they got back to their homes that Americans had burned Korans.

It should be stated that these Korans had been used by prisoners in the prison to write messages to each other, thus desecrating the Korans. The proper method for disposing of a desecrated Koran, according to Islamic custom, is to burn it. Therefore, the military believed it was doing the proper thing in burning these Korans.

The irony here is that if the soldier had not seen the Korans in the furnace, and not retrieved them (while burning his hand and arm in the process) then nobody would ever have known the box contained Korans.

Okay, someone help me understand (a big task, I know).

1. Islamic believers are detained in a facility/prison/jail.
2. Same believers are given or allowed to retain their book of faith.
3. Same believers use their book of faith as a instrument to pass messages by making notes and marking-up said book to pass coded messages.
4. Believers marked-up--now desecrated--book of faith is found and removed.
5. Believers' self-desecrated books of faith is destroyed along with other items.
6. The occupant of the Oval Office makes a big deal out of it and once again 'bows' to a foreign leader.
7. Although the left wing media claim that Bush was responsible for all the actions at Abu Ghraib no fault is levied against the occupant of the Oval Office for these actions by the same media.
8. The believers' book of faith was destroyed in accordance with their beliefs.
9. Weak leader of Afghanistan is now trying to prove to the rest of the Islamic world that he has a pair.
10. If any actions are taken against members of the U.S. Armed Forces the current resident of the Oval Office will not have any chance of staying there for another four years.
11. Number 10 makes this no big deal once he gets the press in-line.

Did I miss anything?

Not crazy, as long as you live in Afghanistan, or Pakistan or KSA....

To let yoy know the proper destruction of the Holy book, Al-Quran is burning alone. NOT throwing the Holy book in trash, garbage, etc and burning everything.

The proper way to treat a killed enemy combatant is to respectfully bury him or put him in a coffin and send him to the country of origin. It is NOT to drag their dead bodies through the streets, spit at them, beat them, hang them from a tree, cut body parts and burn them.

At least our soldiers tried to do the right thing. :mad5

Not saying I believe everything I read, I was just stating that if was done as a means to "get back at 'em," or whatever... It's wrong.

I don't know the whole story. I'll wait and see...

We infidels are the sworn enemies of Islam. Let's pack our gear, get out of that God forsaken place and urge them to continue to kill each other as they've been doing since the dawn of time.

The current POTUS can then bow and apologize for overstaying our welcome, promise it won't happen again and wish them well as we di di mau out of there.

I loved being called an infidel. I believe "infidel" roughly translates to "smart, charismatic, handsome, christian man." I could be mistaken though ;-)

If you want an interesting read on ... let's call it "modernt, democratic Islam" .. (and I'm using the word democratic very, very loosely here) I can PM you an article written by an American Muslim theologian. While it doesn't entirely explain most things.. he definately made some valid points in the differences between modern Muslims and coservative/extremist types.
