Don't know how many of you remember this, it occurred on Christmas Eve 2000.

I was living in the Dallas area then and had a project where I had the privilege of working with Aubrey. I miss him every Christmas season, as I am sure his family does every day.

I do not mind admitting that I am still very angry with the Texas Prison System for allowing something like this to occur.

Rest in Peace Aubrey. And Mr. Rivas, I hope you get what you have earned.

he is where he should be. hope the last years of his life were as unbearable as losing mr hawkins was to his family.

At the time, I lived about 4 blocks from the Oshmans that that happened at. I remember all of the police cars and helicopters. Officer came down our street (one of several I'm sure but only one where I was outside) and told us to go inside that there was a manhunt on. Wernt in made sure I had my weapon close and did not know what happened until the next morning. It was a sad day indeed.

Yea, I remember that. I lived in Euless at the time. And I shopped at that Oshman's many times.

I will pray for the family of the victims of the crime....

The gang was caught in Colorado about a month after the officer's death. One committed suicide rather than be arrested.

They hid out in a campground near Woodland Park for a few weeks before they were discovered. But the standoff happened about a mile away from where I was working at the time in Colorado Springs.
Our building knew it was going on and we were in self-imposed lock down until it was over. Scary stuff. THIS is what really got my dad on my case about learning to defend myself and get a CHL.
Sad, that it's taken me 11 years to be ready to do it.

Glad the guy got what he had coming.

I'm not a big fan of Islam ( ) but public beheadings, stonings, dismemberment, etc. does send a message and seems to keep the crime rate down in the Islam 'hood? Just sayin'...

Come to think of it, our founding fathers had no problem with public punishments. If they were smart enough to come up with this republic who are we to say we know better how to handle our latter day bad guys? Get a rope!

I am all for public punishments! When I was a kid there were still chain gangs that did all of the highway right-of-way maintenance. No power tools; the sling blade was the tool of choice. Made me think that I never wanted to be in their shoes. Today you go to prison and get free medical care, dental care, three meals a day, cable TV, gym membership, etc. The cost to the prisoner? A big fat zero. We the law biding citizens pick-up the tab.

Executions could be offered as pay per view. Just like porn, nobody would admit to watching but it would become profitable. Use the funds to offset the cost of the execution and incarceration. Make it mandatory viewing for the complete prison population. Heck, do in the middle of the prison yard just before mealtime with attendance mandatory for all inmates.

...not a new idea by any means...just an effective one...

I remember reading about it at the time. In my view the execution should have taken place closer to about 10 years ago.

I lived in Irving at the time, about 2 miles from where it happened.
