This full list report in the link above I believe misleading for several reasons. The Dallas area has been broken out into several of it's suburbs, but St. Louis for instance does not list the suburbs. Not sure if they are counted in or not.
I think if you take the MSA's total you can see a better picture of crime overall for your working/living area than the separation. For instance, St. Louis is similar to Dallas in the fact it is surrounded by suburbs that are very safe from a crime standpoint, but St. Louis city proper is ridden with crime. Same for Memphis, TN, Dallas (city of), Detroit, Chicago, etc.
Would like to see the guidelines that were used to compile the CQPress report to determine how they looked at the entries to include them in the list.

It is per city not Metro area. Allen, TX is not in Dallas for example.

Well, if you read the Forbes article, it says it was based on MSA (Metroploitan Statisctical Area). The Dallas-Fort Worth MSA includes 5 counties: Dallas, Collin, Tarrant, Denton and Rockwall. The St. Louis MSA includes several counties in Missouri and Illinois that have a lot of rural farmland, etc, unlike the Dallas MSA. If they just broke out St. Louis City proper in the number for the list, then it will really sway the numbers as north St. Louis an East St. Louis are terrible crime areas.
Can you post a link that exmplains how the .pdf file list was calculated?

Keith,
I may confused you, the Forbes is for Metro area and the list is for cities. It is based on FBI data.

Got it. Being able to compare city to MSA data is a help because a city may not be listed in the individual city data due to being less than 75K in population, but may bump up agaisnt a really bad portion of the city. By looking at the overall area you can get a better picture of how crime may flow out into the urban area.
