Shot a hog yesterday with my long colt using 255gr lrn. Was not impressed with its performance on the hog as it took 3 solid hits to dispatch it. Have access to a reloader and need a load to try out if you have a god one. Have Shot plenty of hogs with .38 special swc 125 gr and had excellent results with the swc. I wonder if swc in 255gr is the way to go? If you have a good load I would sure like to have the info on it. Thanks.

What gun are you shooting?

A Ruger can shoot a much heavier load than a Colt, for example.

BTW, I agree with you on the SWC design. It is a good hitter on game.

It's been a long time since I had a .45 Colt revolver. SWC bullets are the ticket. I would try about 8.5 grains of Unique going to a max of 9.5 with a 250 gr LSWC bullet.

The recent Mike Venturino's re-release of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook lists the following as the most accurate for Lyman #452424 255 gr. LSWC:

Unique starting: 6.0 gr, maximum 8.5 gr. at 845 fps

Maximum velocity for this bullet was achieved with True Blue's max load of 8.0 gr at 926 fps.

The Lyman 49th Ed has 45 Colt loads for T/C Contender & Encore that increase the Unique charge up to a maximum of 10.2 gr (1162 fps) for the same bullet.

The Hornady handbook lists Ruger & T/C separately with increased loads applicable to either of them, but it only lists jacketed bullets.

Ruger only load - 17.0 of 2400 with Penn 270 Gr Thunderhead ( a flatnose lead bullet). Chrono's 1022 fps in my 5 1/2" and 1066 in my 7 1/2" Blackhawk. Have never shot a hog with this gun but would bet this load will put a hole on both sides of most North American critters.

I use the 17grs 2400 with the MP Molds copy of the RCBS 270gr solid or hpt. # 2 alloy with the solid and 2.5% antimony, 2.5 % tin and 95 % lead with the hpt.

I think MP molds has the solid and hpt molds on hand.

This bullet is very accurate but is a handful when you stuff a bunch of 2400 uner it, I load mine for a Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8 bbl
