What IS Background Check?

While some of us wait, maybe it's good time to ask, what exactly is happening.
What happens during the background check?
If it's a check so to see if you've ever been charged or arrested, can't that be done on any computer at the DPS?
Are there interviews done?
If you know or maybe have done them, give us a clue as to what happens.
Just something to toss around, instead of checking the DPS website every hour. :)

Good question! I have no idea what they do but I have been in background check for a month! I sent them certified copys and even sent a Dept. of Justice-F.B.I. background check that I sent for after getting myself fingerprinted. That F.B.I. check cost me thirty dollars on top of the 140 paid to them for the privilege of them deciding If I can carry a weapon.I have no idea what they are doing, but I wish they would hurry up! Ok, I feel just a bit better now!LOL

Not everything is on computer, even in the 21st century. I think DPS still has to send fingerprints to the FBI and who knows how long they take? Also, the rules talk about the DPS director's designee who checks local records where the applicant lives and works. That includes your medical records because you signed a waiver to give them permission. Some designees may go to the local courthouse and police/sheriff/constables once a month and check paper records for all applicants on their list. Some may dig deeper. Either way, you have nothing to worry about if you didn't lie on your application.

I was told in class that they call the Sheriff's office in every town/county that you've lived in during the past 5 years. I'm sure it's much more in depth than that, though. I just wish it didn't take SO long! I'm in back ground check right now. I'm squeaky clean and I've never even had a parking or speeding ticket, so hopefully I don't have to wait more than a couple of weeks for them to get finished.
ETA: I'm a stay at home mom and haven't worked in 8 years, aside from random substitute teaching. Hopefully they speed this up

I'm not the world's most patient person!
