Question about carrying at church...

I'm still waiting for my plastic (manufacturing pending), so I'm reading the penal code while I patiently wait :waiting:

My question is with PC 46.035 (b)(6):

"(b) A license holder commits an offense if the license holder intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries a handgun under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, regardless of whether the handgun is concealed, on or about the license holder's person:
(6) on the premises of a church, synagogue, or other established place of religious worship."

So...I read this as I can't carry at church, is that right?

Thanks!

further down there is a section that reads

"(i) Subsections (b)(4), (b)(5), (b)(6), and (c) do not apply
if the actor was not given effective notice under Section 30.06."

...you'd think you didn't have a prayer of carrying at church...if you stopped reading there...but if you read on down to (i), your joy will abound... ;-)

...you're doing it right, though...a lot of folks say "There...passed my test..." and put their handbook away...if you'll put yours in the reading room and habitually leaf through it almost daily, you'll be strong in your knowledge of the laws...able to stay out of trouble, carry anytime you're permitted, and able to help others get started...there's a lot in there... :thumbs2:

Many of us carry at church all the time. There are even some pastors and others here that carry while in the pulpit and the band. Some have found their church decided to post a 30.06 sign and some of those folks have found new churches.

...because of the peace-loving atmosphere...I rate church high on the list of places that nobody knows I carry...so that someone can't decide that we need to stop that "before somebody gets hurt" and post the church...I was very active in a church for over ten years, and only the pastor and one elder knew I carried, and that was a part of the plan...what they don't know can't jump up and bite you...

Outstanding! It has been almost a year since the last time someone asked that question.

I really wish that they would insert the changes to the law immediately after the part they changed rather than at the end of the section. :grumble :smilelol5:

Why carrying at church is a good idea - it worked out pretty well in this case.

...there was one at Wedgewood who could have been...his heart was broken that he didn't...

...when my wife became aware that I carried at church, she asked me if I didn't think God could handle troubles in His own house??? I replied that He surely could, and He usually used well-trained, well-armed men to do that...

Thanks for all the replies! I see that section now. And yes, I'm reading the .pdf from the dps website and it is VERY hard to keep track of all the indentation and subsections. I wish they would block out the subsections better instead of letting the paragraphs use the entire page width. It's hard to tell what's being clarified and what's not.

I know quite a few people that carry at mine (as well as armed both uniformed and undercover security) so I was kind of confused...glad that's cleared up now

Thanks!

The penal code is a lot easier to read here.

You can download in .pdf or Word format.
