Hey folks..been lurking on this site for a few weeks, great info. I will be moving family to Dallas from Cleveland, Ohio in the next few days and need some confirmation here on a few things:
1) since my Ohio chl is not recognized in Texas, as I understand it, And until i register for a tx chl class and get license, i can still carry loaded and on person in vehicle and while walking from house to vehicle and back. Correct?
2) Texas is not a "shall inform" state. I.e. get pulled over, after greetings, I do not have to inform LEO that I am armed. I will anyway, but just in case I forget. Correct?
3) while hunting, can I open carry with no chl? In Ohio, that's valid while hunting. Is that the same for Texas?
4) I have a small fishing boat with a mossberg 500 12ga in open view at helm that's usual loaded. Any issues while on Dallas lakes? (I know not chl related, but just in case).

Last but not least, I noticed most rifle ranges around Dallas don't allow fmj's, only hollow or soft points. Any recommendations on ranges within Dallas metro that allow fmj's and outdoor? I have a considerable stock of 5.56 nato's that I would like to keep and use.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

You're required to display your CHL and ID if a peace officer asks for ID and you're armed. The penalty was removed but the requirement remains.

Yes, if you're hunting with the handgun and obeying game laws.

You should be fine as long as you avoid COE property and you don't give a game warden reason to think you're poaching.

Thanks apostate for reply's. On the last one, both the lakes I am going to fish on are COE lakes (grapevine and lewisville).. Does that mean no loaded firearms on them? With or without chl?

Elm Fork shooting range allows FMJ at the 50yd range, but not at the 100yd range.

Top Gun Shooting Club allows FMJ, IIRC.

Welcome to Dallas. I used to fly into Cleveland when my g/f was in school in Erie.

If you have time, drive over to Erie County PA and get a PA non-resident license before you go. You can get in and out of the sheriff office in about 30 minutes with license in hand.

It's only $20 and gives you the right to carry in Texas.

This is when you do get your CHL. Until then, while carrying in your vehicle under the MPA, the OP is correct that notification to an officer is not required in Texas.

I should clarify. It is that quick if you have an Ohio CHL. PA will issue non-resident based on the fact that Ohio was willing to issue a license.

But even in Ohio, if someone has a squeeky-clean record, the county sheriff can complete a fingerprint-level FBI check and get a clearance in about 20 minutes. The time-consuming ones are where someone has convictions and arrests that require getting case dispositions. I know of people in some rural Ohio counties that received their CHL within 20 minutes of stepping into the County Sheriff's office -- that is with a complete criminal background check.

Columbus is in Franklin County Ohio. The Sheriff routinely issues CHL's with less than 24 hour turnaround times. Cleveland is in Cuyahoga County -- they take substantially longer.

Just because Texas DPS takes 60 days doesn't means that it actually takes that long to perform the equivalent service. That is more a function of dealing with a large state bureaucracy with no accountability to voters. County Sheriffs are elected officials . . .

The “Means and Methods” restrictions as required under state law apply to all Corps
of Engineers hunting areas with the following additional requirements:

a. Hunting or shooting within 600 feet of homes, developed parks, roads, fishing piers or
platforms, farm and ranch yards, outlet structures, emergency spillways, or other areas is
prohibited unless otherwise stated or posted.

b. Pistols are prohibited.

c. Buckshot (any shot size large than #2 shot) is prohibited anywhere on government
property. Buckshot is prohibited due to increased public safety concerns. Shotguns with rifled
slugs are allowed when hunting deer and feral hogs except at those lakes which restrict deer and
feral hog hunting to archery only.

d. Crossbows may be used in accordance with state law when hunting deer and feral hogs
unless prohibited at specific lakes.

e. Muzzleloaders: Muzzle-loading shotguns may be used at any lake which allows the use of
a conventional legal shotgun as defined by state law. Muzzle-loading rifles may be used only at
Lake O’ the Pines, Town Bluff, Sam Rayburn, and Wright Patman Lakes as stated in the Lake
Information section of this guide.

f. The use of conventional center-fire or rim-fire rifles is prohibited at all lakes, except Lake
O’ The Pines and Wright Patman Lake as stated in the Lake Information section of this guide.

g. The use of pellet, BB, or any other type of air gun is prohibited at all lakes.

If you bowhunt during archery only season, you cannot have a firearm on your person UNLESS you have a CHL and it is concealed while hunting.

Only on non Corp of Engineers property. Handguns are not allowed on COE property period.
