I hate when people say "ideal' when they mean "idea", you would think a tv news correspondent would know the difference.

ETA: Upon further review, he might have said "idea"; the jury is still out.

If that happened here, there would be a possibility of some shot perpetrators. And people wonder why we carry....

I doubt the victim would have had any legal right to carry given that it was St. Patty's Day and he was wearing green.

That man's situational awareness sucked. I have watched a longer version of the video and he was video taped for a longer period of time. The group started off slow and within a minute or two the crowd had made their approach, encircled him and then when he went to leave, after, I am assuming, figuring out what was happening gets KO.

1st. There is little any anyone's life that a stranger is going to want to video. So that should have raised the red flags. The group was videoing their conquest, don't assume anything else. You, leaning up against a wall, is just not that interesting of a subject.

2nd. He did not leave any route of escape and he was liner in his attempted escape. Think like a boxer, bob and weave, it makes for a harder target.

3rd. I don't know what he was thinking, but when some one first enters your comfort zone and you don't immediately go to Condition Orange and start getting out of the area, you may not get out.

Most likely he did not want to be thought of as being racist and offend these thugs. When you notice that you are the center of the videographer's attention even when leaving you need to be in condition Red and look at threats in front of you. This guy walked into a left hook, a little tactical awareness and a fade with head, he would not have been knocked out and would have had the ability to go into a full run. Knowing escape routes would have been good. But he did just what the mob expected him to do. Then like a pack of hyenas they attacked. He is lucky that he didn't get stabbed. Also realize there is a time to attack. The attack does not have to be physical, but yelling, "Hey its the cops!" at the top of you lungs will interrupt their OODA loop, requiring that they re-orientate to take into the possibility that the police are actually approaching. This ruse will normally only last a few moments before they re-orientate. In this confusion, if you know a good escape route, then get the heck out of the area and not return.

Criminals like this have a plan, you should too.

After ignorance and fear, what is a major cause of racism? Racism, while not pretty, is everywhere and knows no color boundaries.

I think this is more of a lesson on why to not get so drunk that you black out. The guy didn't even know the video was out there until a relative saw it and told him about it. He said he didn't know what happened but just woke up in his house all scratched up and beat...didn't know what happened.

Anybody want to speculate how the media would have reacted if this had been a white mob and the victim had been black?
I've been to Baltimore twice. The first was as a teenager with family for a national bible quiz competition in the '70s (we ventured out one time before barricading ourselves in the hotel room). The second time was 10 yrs ago for work (wasn't much better). I do not plan to ever return as this video is exactly the way I remember feeling about the place.
