Saturday, I took my teenagers and one of their friends to ride go carts in San Antonio. My daughter had worn flip flops, and instead of driving all the way back home we went to Academy on Vance Jackson for a pair of shoes with closed backs so she could ride also. While she and my wife were picking out the shoes, my son and I were drooling over the hand gun counter. We overheard a conversation between the salesman and a couple who were wanting to buy an "Assault rifle". Apparently as of Friday they aren't allowed to sell any assault rifles at Academy. The salesman didn't know why or for how long, just that they got a call from corporate that said no sales.

That's fun y since Red Jacket is selling ARs through them.

They have a broader definition of AR. It's pretty much anything that has a 16" barrel and looks tactical.

Who knows for what reason. It could just be that location. Maybe the sales associate misheard.

Some Academy stores will put your handgun in a plastic bag and let you walk out the front door with it. Some Academy stores insist on walking it out and then handing it to you.

No Academy I know of has ever sold an assault rifle - don't know of any with proper Class III dealers license to sell such full-auto or select- fire weapons.

Now if they stop selling semi-auto rifles, I'd be disappointed.

There were hand written notes taped to the "Assault Rifles" So they wouldn't sell them.

weird, because I witnessed an AR-15clone get sold at Academy yesterday (monday) so it must have been that store.

No problem. Isn't Academy pretty high priced on their guns anyway?

I found the problem.

I went to Walgreens the same day a sale on coffee started, and the shelf was empty, I complained that this was the second time I went to get a sale item ... and they had none in stock.

Perhaps at the San Antonio store is about to run what they call "Assault Rifles" on sale for half price and wants to be sure they have them in stock so they won't sell them now (If they go on sale half price, let me know, I'd drive 2 hours ...)
And if they are just semi-auto, it might still be worth the trip.

I know lots of SKS rifles were used to assault during war time ... they got any of those?
If not, any British Muskets like during Colonial times? I wouldn't mind owning one of THOSE military rifles.

Dubious wording aside, that is interesting. The Academy stores in El Paso don't sell AR's or AK derivitives either. They basically don't sell anything auto loading chambered in .223 (let alone 5.56) 7.62x39, 5.45 et al. They do sell bolt action varminters in .223 though and a ton of bolt hunting rifles. They supposedly do this because of the proximity to Juarez ("store policy").

In SA though? Thats certainly odd.
