On April 29, 1992, during the riots that followed the acquittal of the police officers who had beaten Rodney King, a mob dragged truck driver Reginald Denny out of his vehicle in Los Angeles and beat him, severely injuring him.

The incident was broadcast live from a television news helicopter.

A short distance away, four L.A. residents who knew the neighborhood saw the broadcast and went to see if they could help Mr. Denny. The first to arrive, a woman named Lei Yuille, tried to get Mr. Denny back into his truck. The second good Samaritan, Bobby Green, was a truck driver. He drove Mr. Denny to the hospital in Mr. Denny's truck.

Two others, Titus Murphy and Terri Barnett, drove ahead of the truck because Mr. Green could barely see through the shattered windshield.

All four were celebrated as heroes, but later Mr. Green and his family were threatened by members of the gang that the perpetrators of the crime were members of. He moved out of L.A. after their trial.

Today all the good Samaritans keep a low profile except on anniversaries when they are interviewed.

P.S.: I detest the use of the term "good Samaritan" to refer to anyone who lifts a finger to help a stranger. I have seen it applied to people who simply made a 911 call. However, these four people, out of all the millions in L.A., literally risked their lives to help a stranger.

Very brave people. Terrible that Mr. Green and his family had to relocate, but I am not surprised. The bad guys don't like anyone who provides a positive example or gives people hope.

...and in this case, people who will help 'whitey'. Racism is racism, regardless of who throws down the card...first.
