After giving up on taking a handgun through Canada, Charles said to check into a long gun for the trip.
Sure enough, it's a simple process and only $25.

I am thinking a short barrel pump shotgun or perhaps a 45/70 "Guide gun".
Figuring out how to carry it on the scoot is another problem.

I'd also check to make sure you know what's required documentation wise (if any) to re-enter the U.S. at the Alaska border. I don't remember what we had to provide U.S. Customs back in 1979, but we had a shotgun in Canada as a "survival weapon" on a ferry flight from TX to AK in a helicopter. I do remember vaguely we had to account for the shotgun when we entered AK from Canada. It's probably a simple thing to check on, and best to be prepared.

Made that ride 4 years ago. Great time. Fortunatly I had a friend in Tacoma and he had a buddy of his that has a small plane (but no Harley) to take our guns and meet us in Alaska. It was a great trip. Are you going to try for the Iron Butt on the trip?

Naw. Just hope I don't get "Monkey Butt".
I'm gonna take about 8 days through British Colombia/Yukon to Fairbanks.
I'll get tires and oil changed there and attempt to get up the Dalton to Arctic Circle, Coldfoot, and hopefully to Deadhorse.

You'll find the ride from Fairbanks thru the Brooks Range some of the most scenic. I have traveled that route via low level helicopter flight hundreds of times, but never on a bike. I spent the majority of my years in AK flying in and out of Deadhorse, covering the entire North Slope, so don't forget to visit the Prudhoe Bay National Forest, where there's, "a beautiful woman behind every tree"

You should look at the Keltec Sub rifles. They fold up to be a very compact package. Just make sure and check on mag and caliber requirements for every state and Canada.

I did the ride from El Paso to Prudhoe bay last August. It is the experience of a lifetime. I heard a lot of horror stories about people getting turned around at the Canadian border for not having Canadian approved insurance, but I had no trouble at all. I crossed through Montana and it was just a quite two lane road with one Canadian border officer. He ask me a couple of basic questions and waived me through.
I chose to leave the guns at home because I did not want to break an Canadian laws, and I did not want to try to coordinate sending guns to Alaska and picking them up. I did not have any problems and the people were super friendly and helpful. Be careful about speeding in Canada. I was told that 25 KM over the speed limit is criminal, but fortunately I cannot confirm this to be true.
Words of advice:
1) pack a motorcycle approved gas can. Once you hit the Dalton Hwy, it is lonely going.
2) an electric vest will make you happier...a lot happier, and good rain gear goes without saying.
3) airhawk seat pad. I was doing 800-1000 mile days and the airhawk saved my...you know.
Man...now I want to go again!

Or an SU16 if you want a bit more punch.
Folds down to about 6x20

This works too!
BTW you may want to bring some bug spray. The mosquitos up there are horrible in the summer months. Even worse than Texas.

What bike where you riding?
What was your ride time from Coldfoot to Deadhorse?
I'll be on a Harley EGC and more than a little concerned about my gas mileage on this leg.

A take-down model 97 or model 12 shotgun should fit in the saddlebags. If you're rich, there's always the Wild West Co-pilot.

I rode a Triumph Tiger 800XC and did the 244 miles from Coldfoot to Deadhorse in about 6.5 hours. Time is hard to gauge because it is really going to depend on the weather as that road gets very slick with rain. If the road is dry you can haul, if it is wet you crawl. I experienced a lot of rain through out the trip, but the day I assaulted the Dalton Hwy, it was clear and I was making great time. I did the Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay in one stretch and did not stop in Coldfoot for the night. I did deal with a lot of road crews which slowed things down a bit and the truckers on that road are merciless, give them room and watch out for the rocks!
I passed a lot of guys doing the hwy on Harleys so even though I was on an off-road friendly bike, the Harleys were getting down it with no problem. Gas can be a problem. I carried two Rotopax one gallon gas cans like the one at the link I pasted here. I did not need them as I managed to slide into Deadhorse on fumes, but on the way back, I gave the gas to a couple of fellows who ran out on their way up. The good news is everyone, especially the bikers, are super friendly and as long as you have some tube to syphon, someone will help you out in an emergency.
