He made E5. Here is the breakdown TAM:
E1, E2, and E3 are all classified as either airman, seaman, or fireman--depending on what "rate," or job you do.
E4- Petty Officer 3rd Class
E5- Petty Officer 2nd Class
E6- Petty Officer 1st Class
E7- Chief Petty Officer AKA Chief
E8- Senior Chief Petty Officer AKA Senior Chief
E9- Master Chief Petty Officer AKA Master Chief
These are the enlisted ranks. I'm not going to go into officer ranks.
Now, when you see MM2, this is what it means:
MM= Machinist Mate. This is his job, his "rate," ... basically, what he does. For example, I was SWCC, and my rate was classified as SB.
The number following his rate signifies rank. For example, he is a Machinist Mate, and just made E5, or Second Class Petty Officer. Therefore, his rate would be MM followed by his rank 2 (for second class petty officer). MM2-Machinist Mate Second Class, and in the rank structure would be classified as an E5. I left the Navy as a Second Class Petty Officer, an E5, SB2.
The Navy enlisted rank structure can be a bit confusing, but it's actually kind of cool. Every single rate has its initials...
