Finally decided to go for my CHL. While trying to sort through the process I came to a cross road regarding L-1 fingerprinting…


1) I need to obtain “certified copies” of my criminal record from years past to send along with my CHL 6, 78-A/B/C, 85, 86 forms. This requires me to get L-1 fingerprinting to obtain these records. Then send the “certified copies” along with the CHL 6, 78-A/B/C, 85, 86 forms, to DPS.

2) The CHL process requires L-1 fingerprinting unto itself.


Are these two separate processes that require two separate visits to L-1 for fingerprinting or is there a proper procedure for accomplishing both with one visit to L-1?
I’ve searched around but cannot find a definitive answer, so help regarding this will be greatly appreciated…

When you apply for your license on the DPS website, you will then need to make an appointment for fingerprints.
Those prints are "tied" to your application number from DPS.

With this, I believe you will need 2 separate sets of prints.

I haven't heard of needing fingerprints to obtain the records, as they are public records anyway (unless sealed). What jurisdiction is requiring prints?

You don't need to do a criminal records search through DPS. All you need to do to get copies of your disposition is to go to the agency that processed you originally. The county criminal court clerk in the county where the offense occurred should have those records for you.

My history is in two seperate counties, 400 miles away (one way). Is the DPS route my only other alternative?

Call the county clerk in the county where the offense(s) occurred.
they may require a check for $10 or a self addressed stamped envelope or something, but normally, they do not require much else.
