This is a question for instructors and/or members who have done this in the past.

My wife is going to take the class for her initial CHL. My CHL needs to be renewed again by Mar., 2013. I found out yesterday on this site that the renewal class is good for one year, so I am thinking of taking my renewal class with her initial class and then I will submit my application when I am 6 months out. I have heard of this being done before but I am trying to get some idea how it works. The class would probably only consist of me and my wife. I live in a rural area and the instructor lives only a few miles away so that is real nice. My wife just completed with this instructor the NRA Safety (or whatever it is called) class and it was a one on one.

Basically, I am just trying to figure out if it would be worth while for me to do it this way. I am not sure if I would want to sit through the 10 hours or so again.

Any input would be appreciated.

My question would be, how comfortable would your wife be in the class without you?
If she would be fine, and she is not pushing you to join her, then its up to you to spend 10 hours, or as some instructors do, have the renewals join the class mid-way through so they only spend their required renewal time.
When my wife and I did ours, if I was not there, she would not have done it, so I would sit through the 10 hours with her, to ensure she retained her CHL, as if not, she would just let it lapse I am sure.

Your renewal class is only good for 6 months, and you can only renew 6 months ahead of time. So, while it is theortically possible to get close to a year in there, I would suggest you take your class no sooner than 8-9 months before your March 2013 birthday. That way you should have plenty of overlap in the CHL-100 from class being valid and the beginning of the 6 months of DPS renewal window to get your application and paperwork tunred in.

Uh, yeah, guess it is that close.

But your pointing out that the CHL-100 from a renewal class is good for 6 months (not one year) is helpful for anyone who finds this through a search in the future. (Note: the CHL-100 is good for two years after an initial class.)

DPS rule that specifies this (for verification in case it's ever changed, currently section 1 "Evidence of proficiency")

So the way I understand this, I cannot take the class until Sept according to "evidence proficiency" that tornado provided from the Texas Administrative Code.

Incorrect. Your paper that you receive from class showing you passed (CHL-100) is only good for 6 months on a renewal. You can only renew your license 6 months or less ahead of time. So, you must make sure if you take your class before September that there is overlap in the two periods and the CHL-100 will doesn't expire before you submit your renewal to DPS and they can process the paperwork.

Hope that makes sense.

For example, if you take the class in July, the CHL-100 is good until January. So you can submit your renewal any time between the date in September that is 6 months before your birthday and the date in January that is 6 months after your class.

Getting it in before November 6 might make your wait shorter, depending on how things go, if 2008 was any indication.

OK, Real proud of the wife. She (and I) did the shooting portion yesterday (7/26/12). She has no real history shooting but did pretty well using a full size 1911. She (like most everyone I guess) passed before shooting at the 15 yard line. I pretty much had to sit through the 10 hours but it was convenient and I got it over with. So all I got left to do is renew online the first week or so in Oct. and then the way I understand it I am good to go for 10 years as far as the next class. By the way I guess I was the wimp in that I qualified with my G19. She used the 1911 because it has a better trigger.

She is real excited about getting her plastic and will become a member here real soon.

What are the requirements for a renewal? And why is the class 5hrs for a renewal instead of 10hrs for a new CHL?

They figure we only forgot about half of what we learned the first time around.
