Interesting article about schools in Switzerland, where 3 year old children play with saws in school. Their schools must be real dangerous places because apparently children are allowed to have pocket knives in school. What's next --allowing high schoolers to take Tylenol for a headache?

I am one of those aging baby boomers (b 1946) I carried a pocket knife to school from the time my parents gave me one (age 11 when I joined the Boy Scouts.) I never stabbed, cut or threatened anyone with the knife and most of the boys in my schools carried pocket knives. Medicine, we carried our medicine to school and took it like we were supposed to and didn't give it to our friends. We weren't hassled by the cops for riding bicycles to school nor were we considered suspect if walking. Where has common sense gone in our society?

It has simply been replaced by zero tolerance. With zero tolerance, noone has to think, to expose their judgment to scrutiny or to accept responsibility.

Personally, I'd like to follow around one of zero tolerance advocates for just one day. Among the 10,000 laws on the books in Texas, I'm sure that I could find one of those laws that the person was breaking every 5 minute period. Throw in all of the rules and ordnance and I'll bet that I could make their lives miserable.... just like the zero tolerance policy does to the rest of us.

And we probably would have been laughed at if we were driven to school and picked up every day after school. I mean the other students would have bullied us.

Not strictly true. Parents can send a new, unopened bottle of an OTC pain med to school with a permission slip for the kid to take one dose/day. Rx meds do, indeed, need a note from the doc.

Are you sure about that? The reason I ask is because I want to know, is that a state-wide policy, or just one school district's policy? Because I'm fairly sure I've heard NO medicines are allowed without being at the nurse's office...you know, the kids might "peddle" the acetaminophen, or one of those "emo" kids might want to steal it and OD on it...then the SCHOOL might be held liable, and well, its all downhill from there...

Seriously, this kind of stuff upsets me SO badly because its IDIOTIC, yet someone has the perfect answer to make those of us who don't like "zero tolerance" and political correctness look like we are cruel and callous and heartless and refuse to "think of the children".

I knew of a girl ( ten years ago) expelled for having midol in her purse....schools have gone mad.....my recommendation don't join in the madness go private or homeschool.


Edited to adds....At our school (home) the teachers are armed, the seven year olds receive training on the proper use of pocket knives, and the five year olds can tell you the gun rules for kids at any moment. Additionally we can pray whenever we want and if want to we can wallpaper our school room with the ten commandments. If the schools are nuts don't particate in the insanity.

It was my understanding that NO medication of any kind was permitted because "the staff" wasn't trained on the differences between acetamiophen and street drugs. I don't know if it State wide or just the policy of a lot of individual ISDs.
