Going there for gun show today..

Saxet? Every Saxet show I've been to in Austin has been posted and yes, they are held in a county owned building and no, 30.06 is not supposed to apply. You can take a weapon in, but there are LEO's at the door that will make sure your weapon is clear and zip-tie it to make sure it stays that way.

I don't know about San Antonio's Saxet or the ownership status of the building it's held in but I would assume it's the same way.

So under their authority as Austin PD, uniformed police officers are making you violate CHL law by intentionally exposing your weapon?

Saxet San Antonio is held in a private 'Event Center'. Doesn't make sense, the hypocrisy, but the line is always out the door and the LEOs manning the ticket area are friendly enough. I just leave in in the glove box and enjoy the day.

I can't remember for sure whether it's Austin PD or Travis County Sheriff's deputies, but yes. They clear and tag anything that's brought it for sale or for carry.

My problem with this is not so much that they do it, it's that the building is owned by Travis County and shouldn't be posted to begin with.

Well, if the SA building is privately owned, there's no question as to their right to post it. Then you and I have to decide if we wish to patronize the event or not. Like you, I leave it in the truck because I like to go to gun shows.

My problem, as I've stated, is when the promoters post 30.06 on a government owned facility and there's nothing we can do about it short of becoming a test case.

Saxet shows have been posted after some idiot negligent discharges. This was quite awhile ago. I talked to the guy who run the show. They said it was because of liability. They didn't want to as it gave the wrong message. Before the moron bang-bang, I know they allowed concealed carry when asked about it.

Thus, they are not hypocritical. Should they go out of business for making the point?

There is a discussion on this towards the end of the ""Cities Improperly Posting" thread above. I understand why the promoters (or, most likely, their insurance company) would not want loaded weapons at the shows. I don't know that I necessarily agree with it 100%, but I understand it and respect the reasoning, and I could live with it if that's all there was to it. The problem is that by and large, most gun shows (not this one apparently, but most) are held at government owned facilities which by statute cannot be posted. We cannot turn a blind eye to the law just because there is arguably a valid reason for it. Follow the law or change it, but don't make it up as you go along.

Think about large numbers of concealed carriers pulling out their loaded weapons to try out this or that holster, or those grips, or to offer as trade for another weapon, and it's easy to see gun shows are a good place for 30.06 to apply.

I resented the change, but understand it. I was at the Saxet show a few years back when a dealer took a pistol from a patron and inadvertantly discharged it, striking another patron with a richochet off the floor.

It would be illegal for a CHL's to be "pulling out their loaded (or even unloaded) weapons for ANY reason other than the intended purpose. Posted or not.
