Another sobering reminder that bad things happen when people go outside to investigate noises after dark when nothing critical that can't be better defended from inside is at stake.

Though armed with a gun, the man retreated toward his front door, the report states.

The assailant ran after the man and threw a knife at him, which stuck into the back of his left arm and caused him to fall. The suspect then stood over him and said, “Die, you English pig,” before brandishing a machete, according to the report.

The man reached for his gun but accidentally discharged it in his pocket.
Wow

Hey, there's 1,500 enemies out there, let's go outside of the fort and ...

The article didn't say if he shot himself but I can assume that if a gun goes off in your pocket there is a good chance it did. Just another good reason not to pocket carry

Is the guy from England? And if so, how'd the assailant know that?

The article never stated his name or citizenship. Either the assailant was guessing or maybe he knew the bloke.

Not to beat a dead horse, but one could also reasonably ask what the homeowner was thinking (or not) when he decided to keep his gun in his pocket after observing an armed intruder on his property and while retreating from the advancing threat.

The most likely answer is that he didn't have a plan because he never thought the "noises in the night" scenario through beyond going outside with his gun. The "what to do if I encounter an armed intruder who advances on me" never got addressed in his mind, and when that unexpected event happened, it locked up his OODA loop while the bad guy's loop was running at full speed through the execution of his plan for "what do I do if I encounter a homeowner during my crime?"

holy cow. that article is chock full of 'huh?!' statements.

so, some colonial soldier was breaking into someone's home with a machete and throwing knives, gets confronted by a redcoat, said redcoat pretty much shoots himself whilst trying to dispatch the colonial.

interesting.

One could add that it's fortunate he was apparently carrying a mousegun because he could've hurt himself badly if he'd shot himself with something more robust.
