Help me out here people. What Sandusky did was HORRIBLE, but what did it have to do with their football program? They didn't cheat on games or recruiting or anything. Why does the NCAA feel they need to do anything to punish them? What authority do they have to punish them for this type of crime? I'm really having a hard time with this.

I did not go to Penn State or play college football. I couldn't care less about college football, but don't think the NCAA has any business doing anything to Penn State for what happened. That is the legal system's responsibility.

Because others in the program knew of the issue and failed to follow up on it also. Paterno is dead, Sandusky is convicted, so this is the final penalty for failure to report the things that were ongoing and basically covering it up.

For 14 years, from the highest official to the lowest janitor, they knew, and covered up, the child abuse that was happening on their premises.

Rather than risk embarassment to the university or their football program, they looked the other way while children were harmed.

They placed a higher value on their footbal program than on the safety of children.

NCAA sanctions?? I think they should burn down the entire university!

I heard this and like "WOW! $60 million", then I heard that Penn States football program brings ( brought) in $60 mill a year. Now I think it should be doubled. Wife brought up the point at least a few lower level players will get to play the next few years.

Sometime the actions of the higher up people affect the lower level masses. The players did nothing but they are the ones to suffer sadly because of the actions of the leaders that could have stopped it. I am glad honestly.

Yep, unfortunately. So, this may open up civil lawsuits against the school if the resulting impact causes players to loose scholarships, etc.

If this had been going on for a dozen years without any word/s getting out, it would have been a bigger secret than the Manhatten Project.

The NCAA does not have the authority to do what they did. Furthermore, they bypassed the approved procedures for assessing sanctions. Penn State will sue and win.

What Sandusky did was reprehensible. What the school officials did was equally reprehensible. But it had nothing to do with intercollegiate athletics, competitiveness or scholarships, which is all the NCAA has authority over. It smacks of the vindictiveness of a bunch of moralizing busybodies who have nothing better to do than point fingers at others. I'd love to see an investigation of their lives to see how "pure" they really are. Probably a bunch of perverts themselves.

As deplorable as what they all did is, what NCAA rule did they break? Maybe the did break some NCAA rule, IDK. Whatever rule it might have been it couldn't possibly be justified with the punishment they have handed down. The guilty will be punished by the legal system. The NCAA had no business sticking their noses in this and I hope the school does appeal this and win.

I think they didn't go far enough. I don't care if the NCAA has the authority to do what they did or not. I hope it sticks.
