There is an out break of Ebola in Uganda.

It has reached the capital.

Every Ebola virus is slightly different. Some kill 80 percent that are exposed, others less. Some times it kills people so fast, it burns out and does not spread.

Keep your self aware of what is happening with this outbreak. Right now worried people may be boarding planes to Europe to escape the virus. They could be already exposed. If there is an outbreak in Europe that is bad. Worse if it is London as the Olympics are there. If they loose control of the outbreak in Europe it will be hear in Texas almost immediately.

These types discussions are not a big thing with this forum. Other more survival hunting type forums, they talk about this sort of thing a lot.

Isolating yourself and your family before you are exposed and letting it burn it self out, is really the only protection if it goes global.

There is no treatment. No cure. No magic bullet.

Previously these outbreaks have been minor, maybe a few hundred killed at the most. But you never know.

Watch the news. If there are reports of it spreading to Europe, make your plans.

How does Ebola spread? Doesn't it require contact of infected bodily fluids or something? I'm not saying it isn't dangerous, and I will watch the news as you suggest, but panic seems a bit premature.

I saw yesterday that there was an outbreak, but didn't realize that it had reached Kampala. That is not good news, most immediately of course for Ugandans; but people don't fly as much in and out of remote locations. Uganda has an airport with international connections. Given that though, it would seem to be easy enough to simply quarantine passengers debarking from flights originating in Uganda. The incubation period for the disease is, as I recall, not that long. You would know fairly quickly whether most arriving passengers were infected. The incubation period is as short as 2 days and as long as 21 days, but is typically 4 to 6 days on average (SOURCE).

Yes panic is premature, I tend to panic about it. I read the Hot Zone several years ago it scared the wits out of me. Generally requires physical contact, or contact with micro droplets from sick person. That is unless, it is gets an airborne component, then it won't matter as everyone will die.

When a sick person comes into a hospital and a week later everyone who was in the hospital at the time is dead, you have a problem. That is Ebola.

Not to make light of the Ebola outbreak, but maybe this will put it in perspective a little bit:

At least 15 people have died in Uganda from the deadly Ebola virus with the toll likely to rise further, the health ministry said Wednesday.

Ebola broke out in early July in Uganda's western Kibale district, some 200 kilometres (120 miles) from Kampala, and around 50 kilometres from the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.
"Two more deaths
were last evening recorded at Kagadi Government Hospital in Kibale district... The first death was a female who had earlier tested positive for Ebola," said Dennis Lwamafa, Uganda's director general for health services.

The other death, a "new admission", was feared to have also been due to Ebola, although tests had yet to confirm the exact cause, Lwamafa said in statement.
A health worker from western Uganda last week fell sick and travelled to Kampala, later dying in hospital. It was the first time the killer virus, one of the most virulent diseases in the world, had hit the city of 1.5 million.

So.....the perspective:

• Uganda's population: a tad over 34.5 million (SOURCE)
• Kampala's population: 1.5 million
• Total number of known Ebola cases since early July, a month ago: 15
• This has been the first time EVER that an Ebola case has turned up on Kampala....which would lead one to believe that the vast majority of the time the epidemics burn themselves out long before the disease can really take off and threaten the world.

So again, not to make light of it, but we've had 15 cases crop up in a nation of 34.5 million. It isn't to be taken lightly, but also, the numbers tell us not to panic either. Oh, and you should probably avoid eating monkey meat.....just to be safe.....

As long as it can only be spread by fluids, we're good. If it ever gets airborne, watch out.

Tom Clancy's "Executive Orders" dealt with this back in the 1980s/1990s thereabouts. It's one of the Jack Ryan series of novels.....Jack Ryan as president.

You really only have to read the first chapter, that will scare you enough. The virus is so bad it literally liquifies the body.

You really only have to read the first chapter, that will scare you enough. The virus is so bad it literally liquifies the body.

But the subsequent chapters talk about the possibility of mutation into an airborne pathogen. Those are the fun ones.

Thought my favorite stuff from that author may be in a different book (can't remember which book its in) when he talks about the Soviet bioweapons program. They would take things and dose them with antibiotics. Anything that survived got replicated then dosed again. Simple, but effective.

In "Debt of Honor" Jack Ryan became President right after he was sworn in as Vice President. A Japanese pilot of a 747 flies into the Capital Building while the President addresses a joint session of Congress. Tom Clancy wrote this fiction in 1994 seven years before 9/11.

WHO OFFICIAL: EBOLA UNDER CONTROL IN UGANDA

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) -- Doctors were slow to respond to an outbreak of Ebola in Uganda because symptoms weren't always typical, but a World Health Organization official said Friday that authorities are halting the spread of the deadly disease.

Joaquim Saweka, the WHO representative in Uganda, told reporters in the capital Kampala that everyone known to have had contact with Ebola victims has been isolated. Ugandan health officials have created an "Ebola contact list" with names of people who had even the slightest contact with those who contracted Ebola. The list now bears 176 names.
