Had to send in my Taurus 24/7 Pro for repairs today. Called up the nearest FedEx Office (Kinko's), which informed me I had to go to a FedEx World Service Center. Pulled up and was unpleasantly surprised to find it 30.06 posted. So I left my Taurus (and my carry gun) in the car, and checked with the service rep to be sure I could ship my firearm from there. She said "yes" so I did.

Seems that UPS service centers also have this policy:

Question is....why? And how does that policy not put me into legal jeopardy when I need to ship a firearm from there?

Why? Because big companies are generally anti firearms as a "covering their rear" policy.

Legal trouble? If you have a firearm in a sealed shipping box, I don't see how you're "carrying" it under the authority of your CHL so you're fine.

By that same token, could somebody get away with carrying a firearm into any other 30.06 posted facility, as long as they used a box instead of a holster?

Not trying to be a smart alek or legal eagle, just kinda puzzled by this. Maybe it's more like posted gun shows though.

Well you could carry a concealed shotgun or rifle into a 30.06 posted place. 30.06 specifically prohibits carry by a license holder of a concealed handgun.

The reason I figured it wouldn't be an issue is no one is going to arrest you for carrying a shipping box with an unloaded handgun into a shipping facility with the intention of shipping it. If you're just wandering around in posted places with a loaded handgun in a box, you might have more explaining to do.

All that being said, I've never been able to find a case where someone was actually prosecuted for violating 30.06 in the 15 years that it has been the law, so take that into consideration as well.

Same way you can ship a long gun at the US Postal Office but is against the law to carry there. (BTW...our local post office insisted you can't ship a long gun via USPS unless you have an FFL.... *sigh* )

I've just developed the policy of smiling a lot when I go into the USPS office to pick up a firearm that was shipped to me...
