No, we already have laws against assaults, battery, murder, etc. and they still happen. They also happen with other means than just firearms. I haven't seen any laws restricting baseball bats or golf clubs.

But the purpose of restrictive gun laws is not to stop violence. Like a lot of other things that politicians say, their "genuine concern" of public safety is not accurate. Their desire to disarm and therefore further subjugate the peasants is.

I have pointed out many times that if the Aurora shooter had instead used 3-4 Molotov cocktails, the body count would have been much higher.
