I am currently awaiting the arrival of my CHL (first timer). Unfortunately, the primary intrstructors at the CHL course that I recently completed allowed a rookie instructor to cover the material concerning signage. I am still a little unsure about one thing:

Are the 51% and 30.06 signs the only posted signs that can legally keep a legal CCW out of a building? In other words, can I enter any building other than the obvious ones (school, court, stadium) that doesn't have a 51% or 30.06 sign? I'm wondering because I have noticed several signs posted in my hometown that have a picture of a gun with the red circle and line going through it...and others like it.

Those 'gun buster' signs are not legally binding. 30.06 or 51% are the only signs ones that can legally keep you out in Texas (other states are different.) Also remember that a 30.06 sign can only be posted on a government meeting, not a permanent sign on a building, to be legal.

Just for clarification, this is referring to government buildings. 30.06 signs can be permanently mounted on privately owned property, even that which is open to the public.

My bank has one of those no Beretta/Taurus 92/99s allowed signs ... so I carry my Glock or XD when going in.

Also note that stadiums are off limits only when an actual sporting event is taking place, unless 30.06 posted.

For example, my fiancee and I took a tour of the new Cowboys Stadium. No 30.06 signs and no metal detectors. Since there was no professional sporting event occurring, I carried right in. They did check my girl's purse, though, which we both thought was funny.

Because of that, I will never own a Beretta.

We are, IMO, fortunate to have the specificity requirement of the 30.06 sign in Texas. In other states, "Go" and/or "No- Go" are not so clearly defined.

In some other states, the signs have no meaning for CHL. It's no crime until they orally tell you to leave and you don't.

I was reminded of other signage that should be considered. "Vote Here"

One day I went to a grocery store near the house. As I walked toward the store, I pulled up and turned around to return to the car and disarm.

Several of the grocery stores in the area are polling places during elections, and carry is not allowed "... (2) on the premises of a polling place on the day of an election or while early voting is in progress; ..." The "Vote Here" and other election signs don't mention firearms, but the law is pretty clear.

Normally the stores only have blue TABC signs because they sell beer and wine. Of course, those don't apply.

Thanks for the nugget of wisdom. I never even thought of that... It's always good to have things like that on your mind that keep you from making a huge mistake.
