If handguns are the problem,

why is a semi-auto rifle ban the solution?
Perhaps former King County Sheriff Sue Rahr put it best.

“With the Café Racer shooting,” she observed, “I can’t think of a single gun control strategy that would have prevented him from getting a gun…We clearly need more capacity for assessing and treating people who are suffering from mental illness. But that is expensive, it’s hard, it’s difficult. It’s a lot easier to say ‘Let’s pass another (gun) law’.”
The time has come, say gun rights advocates, to decide whether to get behind those who want to eliminate guns, or behind those who want to incarcerate or institutionalize those who misuse the guns.

Quoted from the above link
According to Kevin Nugent, owner of the Shooters Shop in the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis, the pistol used by gunman Wade Michael Page was a Springfield Armory XD-series 9mm with a 19-round capacity. Such pistols are popular with competitive shooters, and Nugent confirmed to this column that Page bought the gun at his store.
This is the first report I have seen of what the gun actually was.
